Wyoming Master Gardeners

Wyoming Master Gardeners The Master Gardener program is offered through University of Wyoming Extension. Master Gardener training provides over 40 hours of education.

The purpose of the Master Gardener program is to train home gardeners in diverse horticultural topics to increase their knowledge and improve their gardening skills. Those trainees extend the reach of University of Wyoming Extension while serving as volunteer educators in their communities. Educational and volunteer efforts impact people and communities throughout Wyoming. Master Gardener Training:
University of Wyoming Extension’s Master Gardener program trains Wyoming gardeners using sound, research-based, and regionally appropriate horticultural information. Classes are taught by UW Extension educators who are experts in their fields. Topics covered include: Introduction and Overview of the UW Extension Master Gardener Program, Basic Botany, Soils, Season Extension, Growing Vegetables and Herbs, Fruit Trees and Berry Crops, Site Analysis and Landscape Design, Herbaceous Plants, Woody Plants, Lawn Care, Integrated Pest Management and Understanding Pesticides, Plant Diseases and Diagnosing Plant Problems, Entomology, and Volunteering in the UW Extension Master Gardener Program. Master Gardener Volunteers:
University of Wyoming Extension Master Gardeners volunteer in meaningful and impactful ways through gardening education activities. There are over 200 active Master Gardener volunteers in Wyoming who provide 8,000 - 10,000 hours of volunteer service each year. We want to help Wyoming grow.

🌬️🌦️☀️ Wyoming Master Gardener reminder: your hardiness zone is the starting point, not the whole plan.

Hardiness zones are useful. They tell you the coldest temperature a plant is able to survive.

But they do not tell the whole Wyoming story.

Wind, snow cover, soil moisture, summer heat, temperature swings, and shelter can all affect whether a plant thrives, struggles, or gives up by July.

Before you buy or plant, check your zone, then check the actual spot where that plant is going.

Serviceberry
Amelanchier spp.
This native, multi-stemmed, small tree or shrub can grow to between 3-18 feet tall. It is hardy to zone 2. It can grow in soils with a pH of 5.5-7 and can tolerate higher. In the spring, it has clusters of fragrant, white flowers that emerge just before small, light-green leaves appear. It has edible small, sweet, berries that ripen in early summer. Serviceberries have striking orange to red fall foliage.

🌱🤦 Ever tried gardening in Wyoming and thought, “Why isn’t this working?”

Short seasons, tough soil, unpredictable weather. You’re not the only one figuring it out. That’s where the Wyoming Master Gardeners Program through University of Wyoming Extension comes in.

Master Gardeners are trained volunteers who learn research-based gardening practices and then share that knowledge with others. They answer questions, offer advice, and help people grow successfully in Wyoming conditions.
