Getting Started with QGIS: An Established Community-Supported Software for Visualizing and Analyzing Spatial Data in 2D & 3D
Speaker: Diane Fritz, PhD, Geospatial Services Specialist

About the talk

QGIS is a free and open source software (FOSS) that is extremely powerful for working with spatial data in both 2D and 3D in a variety of disciplines. During this hour, I will give a high-level overview of QGIS’s many capabilities, introduce the basics of spatial data structures & the QGIS GUI, go over expanding functionality with plugins, and provide resources for furthering your understanding of working with spatial data.

About the speaker

Dr. Fritz is the Geospatial Services Specialist at Auraria Library, which serves CU Denver, MSU Denver, and Denver Community College. Dr. Fritz obtained her Ph.D. in Geological Sciences from the University of Colorado Boulder and a B.A. in Biochemistry from the University of California San Diego. Her main role on the Auraria Campus is supporting faculty and student researchers in geospatial methods and data in their projects. Dr. Fritz discovered GIS while working on a hydrology project and now enjoys sharing her interest in geospatial technologies through the Maptime Mile High meetup group she runs. When not playing with data, she enjoys being in the mountains on a bike, on foot or on skis.

This talk is presented by the Rocky Mountain Members in Transition (MiT), a joint effort of members of AAPG, SPE, WOGA, COGA, DWLS and RMAG.
