Family Literacy Center

Family Literacy Center We are a non-profit 501c3. Our Mission: Building skills and enriching lives through literacy in Lapeer County and surrounding areas.

We provide free tutoring and support to those seeking help in getting a GED, ESL learning, and
basic literacy. We offer free, one-to-one tutoring for adults who want to improve their reading, writing, math, science, or English-speaking skills. Students often want to improve their skills for the workplace or prepare for the GED. We can help students through the process of getting their GED We o

ffer a JMG (Jobs for Michigan's Graduates) program for out-of-school youth, ages 16-24. In this program, we provide career guidance and support, training, and assistance toward getting a GED. We can help students complete financial aid requests, find out about training programs, sign up for college, and much more. This is a wonderful opportunity for young adults who need extra support. We also offer tutoring programs for children in partnership with local schools and libraries. We target children that are not at grade level and provide one-to-one tutoring to help them improve their skills and develop a love of reading. Additionally, we offer skill-building workshops for families. These include:
*PACT (Parents and Children Together) ~ 90 minute workshops with families of 1st through 5th graders. These programs focus on decoding skills, comprehension and math.
*Playgroups ~ 6 week programs meeting 90 minutes each week. This is offered for parents and their children from birth to age 5. We sing, dance and do many fun activities that help develop learning skills and prepare kids for school.
*Ready, Set, Go ~ a 60 minute workshop where families try out activities to test kindergarten school readiness. Families also get helpful checklists to measure progress.
*Tutoring Made Easy ~ a 6 hour workshop that teaches adults how to be more effective tutors for their own kids.

We just got this email from one of our students. PLEASE READ!

I just want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart. I truly don’t think I would be where I am today without you and everyone at Michigan Works and the Family Literacy Center. The help and encouragement you gave me while I was working toward my GED completely changed my life. Earning my GED with your support gave me the confidence and opportunity to keep moving forward, and I will always be grateful for that.

After earning my GED, I went back to Michigan Works and was approved to complete my Medical Assistant certification through Stepful. I successfully completed the program, and I am now a Certified Medical Assistant.

I am currently employed as a Medical Assistant. I work 40 hours per week and earn $19.50 per hour. I absolutely love what I do, and it feels amazing to have a career that I’m passionate about.

I honestly can’t thank you, Michigan Works, and the Family Literacy Center enough. You all believed in me and gave me the opportunity to build a better future for myself and my family. None of this would have been possible without your guidance, support, and encouragement, and I will always be thankful for everything you’ve done for me.

I hope my story can encourage others to keep going because taking that first step truly changed my life.

Thank you again for everything!

Sincerely,
Autumn D
