Stage combat has evolved into a precise discipline over the past decades. Since the Society of American Fight Directors formed in 1977, actors now train and certify in specific weapon techniques, ensuring safety and skill on stage.

At Michigan Combat & Movement Arts, we offer training that blends physical challenge with mental focus, exploring cultural and historical combat forms.

Join our after school program to learn swordsmanship, staff defense, and lightsaber play. Classes meet Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3pm and 4:30pm.

In September, we focus on sword skills using stage and film techniques to improve control and timing. October shifts to staff defense, teaching practical moves to protect yourself with this versatile weapon. As the holidays approach, November and December spotlight fun and fitness with lightsaber play, blending agility, coordination, and imagination.

When you watch a fight scene on stage or screen, every move you see is carefully planned. The fight director designs each step to fit the story and make sure it looks real. They teach the actors how to perform the moves safely. Safety is a top priority—they check all the weapons and set rules for rehearsals.

On movie sets, stunt coordinators do something similar. They work with actors and camera crews to capture the best angles, making fights believable without risking injury.

At Michigan Combat & Movement Arts, our classes show you the skill behind the scenes. We train both your body and mind to handle combat arts safely and effectively.
