Did you know?

It's easy to think school libraries and public libraries do the same thing—they both inspire a love of reading and learning. While they share many values, each has a distinct role.

School libraries partner with educators to support classroom instruction and help students build the knowledge, critical thinking, and information literacy skills they need to succeed in school—and beyond. School library staff are often instructors as well, teaching information literacy directly to students while fostering independent reading.

As students continue their education in college, academic libraries expand this support by providing access to specialized research resources, scholarly collections, and services that advance teaching, learning, workforce readiness, and faculty research. Librarians in academic libraries are often faculty members, teaching information literacy courses, engaging in student research assistance as subject matter experts, and conducting their own research and writing for professional publications.

Public libraries serve their entire community, welcoming people of all ages and backgrounds. They offer books, technology, lifelong learning opportunities, workforce and small business resources, early literacy support, creative programming, and spaces to connect, explore, and grow. Public libraries often partner with local schools and school libraries, but their mission is to serve the diverse needs and interests of everyone in their community.

Different libraries. Shared purpose. Helping people discover, learn, and thrive throughout every stage of life.

With so many awards to choose from, one of the MASL Awards is sure to fit someone that you have worked with this year. Perhaps it’s a MASL colleague in your district or school? Perhaps it’s a government official? Perhaps it’s a volunteer who helped you get through this crazy year? Spend a few minutes to & nominate someone today. Our MASL members and partners deserve to be celebrated!

Dear MASL Members and friends,

The Senate proposed budget includes two line items for school libraries:
1) $21 million in section 35e to support school library staffing and materials
2) $3 million set aside in Grow Your Own funds in 27b to support school librarian certification

The Governor's proposed budget includes item #2 (but not #1) and the House budget does not include either of these items. MASL feels that it is important for both of these items to be included in the final budget.

Budget decision makers are meeting right now to negotiate and decide which items make it into the final School Aid budget for this coming school year.

Thus,the MASL Advocacy Committee is asking everyone to TAKE ACTION NOW by reaching out to the budget decision makers to ask them to ensure the school library budget items are included in the final budget to support the state's high priority goal of increased literacy achievement.

It is simple to take action using this "One Click" Action.

PLEASE TAKE ACTION and also please ask others (colleagues, friends, families) to take action as well.
