St. Johns tied for first place in Regional Science Olympiad competition
The St. Johns Science Olympiad team proved once again that hard work pays off by taking first place at a closely contested regional competition among 22 mid-Michigan schools held at Lansing Community College on Saturday March 16. The varsity team earned 199 points overall to tie for first place with East Lansing who also earned 199 points. They were followed closely by Holt with 193 points. Of the 23 science and engineering events St. Johns took six first place trophies, and four second place medals, finishing out of the top five in just four events. First place trophies were won in Chemistry Lab, Circuit Lab, Dynamic Planet, Experimental Design, Mousetrap Vehicle and Sounds of Music.
The St. Johns Junior Varsity team also did exceedingly well, earning 123 points overall putting them in first place among the junior varsity teams and unofficially 7th overall in the competition.
Coach Rich Lund had this to say about the team's success: “At the start of the season, after our first invitational, things looked a bit rough. Definitely we had a lot of success at the Haslett invite, but at the same time, we were noticeably behind where we needed to be compared to the others in our region. We lit some fires in strategic areas we needed them, and the team responded. Oh, did they ever respond. Our Olympians, every single one, upped their game. They didn't aim for the target, but through it, and we blasted far beyond it. I'm so extremely proud of them.”
The varsity team will advance for the 11th time in 13 years to compete in the Science Olympiad State Finals at Michigan State University on Saturday April 27th, where the top two teams in the state will move on to the National Competition being held at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.
