In 14+ years we’ve taught over 15,000 people with disabilities how to sing, dance and act in five states. Here’s some of our biggest takeaways:

1. It’s about the process not the product.
The showcase at the end of our time together is big and exciting. Especially since our students write the script. But the rehearsals and time spent leading up to the big day is far more important.

2. Theatre has a way of bringing people together.
Having a common goal, working on a big project… it makes a family. And we have a group that’s been together since the beginning; that’s 14+ years! That’s a lot of relationship building and bonding.

3. Sharing stories is powerful.
Many of our actors are marginalized and ignored in micro and macro ways. Handing them a microphone and saying their opinion matters is an experience everyone deserves.

4. Success doesn’t always look the same.
Some of our actors work hard to memorize a monologue. Others work just as hard to stay on their spot on stage. To the outside one looks more impressive than the other but hard work can’t always been seen from the audience.

**And our biggest secret…….**
5. It’s not at all that different.
Actors with disabilties are, well, actors. The process of teaching singing, dancing and acting may have a couple more supports along the way (communication devices, visual prompts, etc) but at the end of the day moving, grooving and memorizing a script is all the same.
