CHANGE is needed. And CHANGE is coming. These amazing people who chose this as their career… they care for, love, teach, inspire and help pave the way for each child to start a successful journey. Within these walls, children learn kindness, build confidence, and form independence. They learn manners, how to share, take turns, put their own winter clothing on. Within these walls they create lifelong friendships, learn empathy, take care of each other. Within these walls, they learn integrity, right from wrong. They learn how to be a good friend, not to judge others. Within these walls, they learn how to be a good person. Today, thank an early childhood educator. They are shaping our future. Change is needed. And change is coming.
Flashback to 12 years ago. Little Scholars’ grand opening. 🎊 I was presented with this from House Rep Joan Bauer and “Senator” Gretchen Whitmer now Governor Gretchen Whitmer Who obviously went on 9 years later to became Michigan’s 49th Governor. Feels like a lifetime ago. Feels like yesterday. Over the years Staff came, staff left. Some stayed a few weeks, others stayed years. Lifelong Friendships were made. Character was built. Children have grown up before our eyes. The families became our families. The first “graduating class”- the first true set of Little Scholars babies are now in 7th grade. It’s hard work. Long days. Low pay. But little hands holding yours, watching first rolls, crawls, steps, first words, songs, learning to eat on their own, their first artwork. Learning to take turns, sensory tables, how proud they are when they master a skill- watching them grow and wishing the time would slow down, seeing tears in the teachers’ eyes as the child moves up into the next room because they’re ready. They’re ready for new adventures; ready to learn new things, ready to meet new friends and teachers. Dramatic play, recognizing their written name, and other common words. Story time, art, lots of outdoor play… Then along comes learning early word recognition, phonetic sounds, numbers and number games, learning early math computations. Early science exploration and experiments. Writing their first and last name freely with no help. And a HUGE one- being able to master putting ALL their own snow gear on with no help- now, if they can achieve that at 4… you can pretty much count on them attending Harvard one day. All of this before the first day of kindergarten. Playing and laughing together in the Pre-K room… just as they played and laughed together back in the baby room, usually the same kids. And then they fly the nest to kindergarten where, their confidence, kindness, intelligence, and willingness to share make them shine like a star. And the teachers from their earliest years in all the different rooms wipe the tears from their eyes at graduation, remembering how THEY helped teach that child. How THEY were a part of that child’s story. That little 5 yr old who walks out the door a confident kindergartener … it took a village. A village between their parents, the teachers, the directors, the owner(s) of that center working together to provide a safe, clean, happy learning experience. Where there’s enough funds to purchase curriculum, supplies, materials, and quality staff. It’s physically demanding, emotionally draining, low paying (mandated ratios and funded 100% on private tuition) … yet; it still remains the most rewarding work for these ladies. A childcare teacher. They are the heroes. And it’s time. It’s time for Us and all the other Early Learning Centers and the teachers who show up every single day. Never expecting kudos or pats on the back. It’s our time. As we move forward in this new world we live in, for the centers that survived, now with huge waitlists due to the amount of centers who didn’t make it through the flames of Covid… I hope centers are never taken for granted again. I hope the whispers coming from the President will be heard loud and clear by Congress and that the Childcare teacher will not be forgotten or under-appreciated again. That Center owners never again will have to play the sink or swim game alone again…. not only during a global pandemic but at any time. Childcare workers are burnt out. There are few unemployed workers willing to work these days. Our center is operating with all hands on deck; each day staff working 50+ hours a week to keep the doors open for the families. Most centers are in a similar boat. If you know one, thank a Childcare teacher, a director, an owner… thank them. A simple, unexpected nod of encouragement goes a long way for all that they do.

Seems to be there are a lot of pre-k programs that are waitlisted. We have a few openings in our PreK room at Little Scholars. South border of DeWitt/Lansing. 1754 E Clark Rd. We are play-based learning but incorporate many STEM activities into our curriculum.
We have a small handful of openings for both summer and fall. This is a full-day program for children ages 4-5. (curriculum time is roughly (9-3) but our hours are 7-6. We have the most amazing group of teachers I’ve had in the past 12 years. My daughter attends the Pre-k program and she, as well as most of the class are hitting 2nd and 3rd grade learning benchmarks. I am a former 1st grade teacher of 5 years with a Master’s Degree in Early Chikdhood Education.
Locally owned and operated. No franchise. Revenue stays in the community. We are a Small business who survived Covid and came out the other side thriving. Teachers are compensated generously because they are so very much appreciated. I invite you to meet us, see our programs and set up a tour by messaging us or emailing us ([email protected]) or calling us 517-993-5195. Ask for Mariah Grant for scheduling tours. Visit our website for more info.
If you are looking for a fairly small (4 classrooms total) family-oriented, close-knit center, who make kinda a big deal out of holidays and birthdays; we are your place!! 🤣 I’m the owner, Audrey, and would be happy to answer any questions you may have, as well as our director Mariah who is easier and quicker to get ahold of. We’d love to have some new friends join our center.
We accept birth through-young afterschool. IF there is a waitlist in a particular room, it is short and that will all be changing soon as children move on up to the next classroom this summer.
Check us out. You will not regret it!
Our kids experienced a wonderful day yesterday. Beach day! Sprinklers, water tables, fun in the sun... and even an Ice Cream Truck made an appearance! Memorable and fun doesn’t even begin to describe it. We do many things like this throughout the year. If this sounds like the place you and your child would LOVE to learn with awesome teachers while having the time of their lives, let us know! We have a few spots left and would love to fill them with new friends! We accept birth through young-afterschool children. Contact us! [email protected]
