About the Everett Dance Program

Meet the Founder & Director Emeritus:

Karen Sprecher has been a dancer, choreographer and teacher for most of her life. A graduate of Michigan State University, she holds a Bachelor’s degree in Social Science with a minor in Dance, as well as a Master’s degree in Curriculum & Instruction. Under her mentor, Dixie Durr at MSU, she performed and choreographed with Orchesis and the MSU Repertory Company. In 1976, when Diane Newman created Happendance, Karen was a founding member and served as dancer, choreographer, and assistant director for many years.

In 1974, while substitute teaching at Everett High School in Lansing, Karen started an after school dance club, which led to the development of a dance curriculum in the Performing Arts Department. For over 30 years, with the continued support of the Lansing School District’s administration, she taught 5 classes a day, creating a unique program that presented 2 major concerts, musicals, and numerous other performances a year. Over 3,000 Lansing elementary school students were bussed to Everett each year to see a dance concert. Today, Everett is now the Visual and Performing Arts Pathway, and the Dance Program is under the direction of Clara Martinez and is going strong. Plans are underway to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the program in 2019.
