It’s Student Support Coordinator Appreciation Week, and today we are so proud to highlight Zahra Makkawi. She received the national-level 2025 All In for Students - Site Coordinator Award for her demonstrated leadership and commitment to helping students stay in school, graduate, and move toward a brighter future.

At the start of every school year, our Student Support Coordinators create a Needs Assessment and Support Plan to identify each school’s most important opportunities for improvement and pinpoint exactly how they will address opportunities and deliver critical resources to students and families. Zahra has already wrapped up her school’s Needs Assessment and Support Plan for this year! Her strong work ethic and attention to detail shine through everything she does. ✨

Today, we are proud to recognize Kristy Wyngaarden, Student Support Coordinator at Oehrli Elementary in Montague Area Public Schools. Kristy is dedicated to building strong connections and inspiring fellow Coordinators. At the start of the year, she created an introductory graphic to introduce herself to her school staff and shared the idea, inspiring her fellow coordinators to find creative ways to engage with their own schools.

Kristy is also helping bring back the district’s Wildcat Walkabout! This special event connects community partners with local families and the school community right before home football games. 🏈 Kristy’s dedication strengthens local partnerships, builds community, and highlights why having CIS support in every school building makes such a vital difference.

Mariam Beydoun is known for the incredible care, creativity, and dedication she brings to the Edsel Ford High School community every day. She models this dedication through deep care and relationship-building.

Last school year, Mariam brought a volunteer into the school to offer free haircuts for students, giving families a great resource and giving her students a huge confidence boost as they finished out the year. By inviting community partners directly into the school environment, she makes sure every child feels supported and valued.

It’s Student Support Coordinator Week! Today, we’re celebrating Paige Walker!

For more than seven years, Paige has been a steadfast advocate for students at Communities In Schools of Michigan. She’s always thinking ahead for her students at Detroit Premier Academy, going above and beyond behind the scenes.

Just before this year’s back-to-school event, she personally packed more than 200 backpacks with school supplies to ensure her students can focus on learning. Paige established a Basic Needs Locker three years ago, allowing students to access essential items discreetly throughout the school year.

Her impact hasn’t gone unnoticed. Last year, the staff and students at her school honored her by creating “Miss Paige Day.”

Even when faced with operational challenges, such as transitioning into a new workspace, Paige remained completely focused on her students. Paige’s seven-year tenure with CIS of Michigan reflects a profound dedication to our mission and unwavering support for her school community. Thank you, Paige, for everything you do! 💙

We had an incredible time at Detroit Premier Academy for our latest Backpack Giveaway, making sure our students step into the classroom feeling confident, prepared, and supported!

Thanks to our amazing community partners and supporters, we distributed 215 backpacks filled with essential school supplies directly to local students and families. 📚✏️

Providing essential school supplies removes basic barriers so our students can focus on what matters most: learning, growing, and thriving.

Today, Communities In Schools of Michigan celebrates the hard work and dedication of workers across our state. We also celebrate the incredible team of educators, Student Support Coordinators, school staff, and community partners who work tirelessly every day for our students. It takes a dedicated community to ensure every Michigan student has the resources, relationships, and support they need to show up to school and succeed. Strong communities build strong schools, and strong schools build a brighter future for all.
