What's hiding at the bottom of Lake Superior? Michigan Technological University researchers are working to find out.

Michigan Tech's Great Lakes Research Center led a mission last September to map 45 square miles of Lake Superior's floor using cutting-edge autonomous surface vessel technology — part of a broader national initiative called Lakebed 2030, which aims to fully map all five Great Lakes at high resolution by the end of the decade. Only 15 percent of the Great Lakes' lake beds have been mapped at high density, and much of the existing data is decades old.

The effort is about more than discovery. Better maps mean safer navigation, stronger conservation, and a deeper understanding of the freshwater resources that 40 million people depend on for drinking water.

Grand Valley State University has earned national recognition for its commitment to community engagement through the 2026 Carnegie Community Engagement Classification, a designation that reflects deep partnerships, real-world learning and meaningful contributions to local and regional communities. GVSU’s work spans academics, research, service and programs shaped by industry input to prepare students for evolving workforce needs.

This type of engagement demonstrates how public universities lift communities across Michigan. GVSU's latest economic impact report highlights the institution's $3 billion impact on the state economy. For every $1 the state invests in GVSU, the university generates nearly $31 for Michigan’s economy. One in every 20 college-educated jobs statewide is held by a Laker with more than 116,000 jobs sustained by alumni and by the activities of the university and its students. GVSU graduates in Michigan annually earn $7.6 billion, strengthening the state’s economy and showcasing the value of a Grand Valley degree.

At Ferris State University, new data shows the university’s influence extends far beyond the classroom and campus — it plays a major role in Michigan’s economic landscape. An independent study by the Anderson Economic Group found that in 2024, Ferris State generated more than $1 billion in net economic activity across the state, driven by university operations, student spending and alumni earnings. The report highlights the value of hands-on, career-focused programs that equip graduates with skills Michigan employers seek and help retain talent in communities statewide.

That impact is part of a much larger story. An economic impact report commissioned by the Michigan Association of State Universities shows that Michigan’s 15 public universities together generate nearly $45 billion in annual net new economic activity, support more than 129,000 jobs and contribute billions in tax revenue — underscoring the statewide value of public higher education.

Eastern Michigan University isn't just educating students — it's powering Michigan's economy.

A recent analysis by Anderson Economic Group found that EMU contributed more than $1.52 billion in net new economic activity to Michigan in fiscal year 2024, supported more than 3,200 jobs statewide, and generated $469 million in state tax revenue — 18 times the state's appropriation to the university.

That kind of return is part of a much bigger story. Michigan's 15 public universities collectively generate nearly $45 billion in annual net economic activity and deliver a 28:1 return on public investment. EMU is a major reason why.
