Advocacy Beyond the Bedside

Advocacy Beyond the Bedside We can’t solve every problem at the bedside.

We’re building a movement to address the policies, systems, and social conditions that impact health, families, and communities every day.

I’m incredibly honored to receive the Michigan Nurses Association’s 2026 Carolyn Heitamaki Political Nurse Activist Award.

But I’m not putting this award on a shelf.

I’m still at the bedside. I still take care of patients. And I see every day how decisions made by politicians eventually land right in front of us, with our patients.

That’s why I refuse to believe advocacy stops at the bedside.

Nurses have a voice. We have experience. We have credibility. And we have power.

Advocacy Beyond the Bedside is about teaching nurses to use it.

At the bedside. In our communities. At the Capitol. And at the ballot box.

Because advocacy isn’t something nurses do when we leave nursing. Advocacy is nursing.

Nurses congratulate Abdul El-Sayed on winning the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate in Michigan.

Abdul has walked picket lines with us. He's championed and workers' rights. We're proud to have endorsed him and we're ready to help him win in November!

Should utility companies be allowed to bankroll politicians in Michigan?

What about companies that are being paid with our tax dollars?

These are questions voters will likely have a chance to decide at the polls as the “Michiganders for Money Out of Politics” petition moves closer to making the ballot in November.

ATTENTION TO ALL MENTAL HEALTHCARE WARRIORS!

Mental health care is already hard enough to access in Michigan.

At a time when we needs more Mental Health resources, thousands of patients could be at risk of losing access to the therapists they know and trust because of changes being implemented by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan.

Mental health providers across the state are warning that these changes could cause huge disruptions to care, force patients to switch counselors, and place additional strain on an already overwhelmed mental health system.

If you believe mental health care should be accessible, affordable, and patient centered, please consider joining the rally:

📍 Blue Cross Blue Shield Building
232 S. Capitol Ave., Lansing

📅 Tuesday, June 23

⏰ 4:30 PM (arrive by 4:15 PM if possible)

This isn't about politics. It's about protecting access to mental health care for all Michigan families, children, veterans, and anyone who depends on these services.

Show up. Be heard. Stand with mental health patients and providers.
