As we passed our one year point of virtual learning because of COVID-19, the students wrote sentences about their experiences. I pulled some common phrases from their sentences to share. Wow, it's been a year!

5th In our series, Tell Your Story, is Birere.
My Life Story
My name is Birere Serutoke, I was born in The Congo, or DRC, on February 14th, 1968. I have a wife and ten children. I also have a mom, her name is Nyraneza. My daddy’s name is Birere, he died in 2009. He also had ten children; six boys and four girls.
In elementary school and the first three years of high school in the Congo, I studied French. I went to medical school for one year, and I went to Bible school when I got to Rwanda. Now, I have a theology diploma.
I was born into a poor family. My daddy, nor my mom got a chance to go to school. Yet, my dad did everything he could for us to grow up in good condition.
In 1999, war happened in The Congo and that is when I took my family to Rwanda to be refugees. As a refugee, I had nine kids. I spent 17 years as a refugee. As a refugee, I did not have a job, or anything to help my family. But Rwanda was able to send us here in 2016. I appreciate everyone who helps refugees that are here and those that are still in Rwanda.
Now, my family and I are living the best life, just like I wanted. I eat whenever I want. I sleep well. Back in Rwanda, I used to eat anything they gave me. My kids have school to go to, and they are growing in good condition. I’ve been growing through all of this too. I thank God for the reason that now I started to go to adult school. I’m learning a lot of new things, like a new language. My teacher’s name is Deborah.
