As you begin the week after the Fourth of July holiday, we wanted to share a few of the items we'd recommend reading as you reflect on the foundational values of 250 years of the Declaration of Independence. We recently reviewed these texts during our Civil Rights & Citizenship Cohort in Alabama.

Today, our We the People cohort was accompanied by 2 foot soldiers who witnessed Bloody Sunday in March 1965. Alice and Denise were young teenagers when they courageously joined Dr. King and many other activists on an historic march from Selma to Montgomery as they advocated for equal voting rights promised to them, and all citizens, by the US Constitution.

We visited their childhood school in Selma, walked the Edmund Pettus Bridge and spent time having lunch at Campsite #1, hosted personally by David Hall’s remarkable family.

We asked them if they knew at the time they were making history. Alice responded, “we just knew we were doing what was right, and what was needed.”

Over the last few days, MCCE has traversed across Birmingham, Alabama with Michigan educators as we consider the intersections of the civil rights movement and citizenship. We've been joined by Dr. Danielle Leek, Hon. Lindsey Draper, and former Jefferson County Treasurer Mike Miles as they've shared their own stories and expertise on citizenship, activism and how religion & community have impacted many of the most historic events we study today.

Today, dozens of educators have gathered for our Juneteenth Kick-Off dinner as we prepare to journey to Alabama together for our Civil Rights & Citizenship Journey with a wonderful We the People Cohort. Thank you to the iconic Barbara Mason for being our keynote speaker and discussing her own experiences with segregation, civil identity and activism.
