Sometimes, you just have to build it. Dr. Mark Johnson's screen door finally fell apart. The heart has its reasons of which reason knows nothing. (Sentimental feelings are not to be questioned).

Therefore, to keep exact proportions intact, as if the door had never met its demise, and so his eye for beauty be not disturbed or distracted - that meant buying a new door was unsatisfactory, not available, not ever to be the same, and unthinkable.

The Lab's Wood Shop happened to have a little old growth Fir, very hard to find, very straight grained and just the right thickness.

A series of one-on-one lessons and a a lot of handwork later: voilà !! A new but very old door to a writer's retreat Yurt. Away from the house, alone with one's thoughts, the scent of of old forest (less flying pests) wafting through an old friend.

These fellas deserve a hand. 👏 About 100 people contributing thousands of hours of All-Volunteer work on 8 Tiny Homes in Langley... And these 5 men are those consistently present, daily it seems, while most of us play a much more limited role. The affordable Work Force housing project is almost done in no small part due to the efforts of these 5 mainstays! Our hats are off to you.

Last week, our students' handcrafted charcuterie boards were the featured auction items raising funds for WIN (Whidbey Island Nourishes) at the Dancing Fish Vineyards. Funds raised through the sale of the charcuterie boards go directly to support WIN's important mission and needed services. Connecting our young people to learn about and contribute to the great organizations on Whidbey is an important part of our mission. Thank you WIN for all the good work you do!

John Filicetti stops by the Wood Shop with a 2" thick slab of dusty old walnut, slightly twisted and warped. We made a 'sled' and shimmed the piece to split the difference and take off the least amount of wood to flatten one side, then flipped it over for the other. Flat and beautiful, he'll be making a small table out of it - (send pics of the final John!).

Mugging for the camera, Glass Artist John de Wit comes to the Lab's Wood Shop at Langley. He may be widely known as a gifted glass blower and pioneer in the use of high-fire enamels, but Wood? Actually, he's pretty good at that too.

Here he's making a conference table from ordinary lumberyard stock and needed to square the edges to glue and join them together for the top. We're happy to help the creative become even moreso in pursuit of their vision. Hope to see pics of the final result!

Beginning at the beginning, just try smoothing the rough. When you feel that result, silky and cool to the touch, there comes a smile, a "wow"... and the chase is on.
Intro? There is no Intro to Wood Shop, per se. Wood Shop is the means make the imagined... real. So we begin there. What do you imagine? Just what is 'it' that you'd like to make real?

"Imagination is more important than knowledge." Someone famously said that, but like all bumper sticker wisdom, there's more to the story. Learning is not linear, it loops, its iterative. You imagine, you learn, which spurs the Imagination moreso.

And so yes, we learn about the tools and techniques of woodcraft, because we want to, we need to. Now we have Motivation, an insistence to learn. The rest? Well, that's just another day at the Wood Shop.
