Meet Ashley Cole! 🧡

Hi, I’m Ashley Cole, and I’m so excited to be part of the Altitude Tutoring team! I’m a passionate educator with extensive experience helping students with varied abilities strengthen their literacy skills. I believe that building strong relationships with students and families is an important part of creating meaningful, lasting success. 🥰

I earned my Master of Education in Reading from Stetson University and am a Certified Evidence Based Literacy Instruction (EBLI) Instructor. I’m also trained in Releasing Writers (ThinkSRSD) and hold licenses in Elementary Education, Reading, and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL).

But there’s more to me than teaching! When I’m not working with students, you can find me practicing yoga 🧘‍♀️, spending time with my family as a proud mom ❤️, reading books, and advocating for children and families affected by food allergies.

I’m so grateful to be part of a team that believes every child can learn, persevere, and achieve! 💫

The first week of school can feel like a lot. For some kids, it’s exciting. For others, it’s exhausting and even anxiety-producing.

If your child has struggled in school before, it’s easy to start watching for signs that this year will be just like the last. Try not to let the first few days, or even the first few weeks, shape your expectations.

New teachers are getting to know their students. New routines are still being established. Your child is adjusting too.

Give them time. Keep encouraging them. Check in with them after school. Stay in communication with their teacher.

And if concerns continue, don’t ignore them. Early support can make a meaningful difference. Advocate for what your child needs.

What your child needs most is for you to believe in them. Practice reading with your child one on one, away from the distractions of siblings who may unintentionally interrupt or laugh at mistakes.

A calm, supportive environment helps children feel safe to take risks, make mistakes, and build confidence.

Most struggling readers’ confidence is so low they do not believe they can do it. They need you to bring the calm and the belief until they can believe it themselves.

Keep cheering them on and remember that learning to read is a marathon not a sprint for most kids.

As children head back to school, we want to wish every student, teacher, and family a wonderful first day! 🎒🍎 The start of a new school year is filled with excitement, fresh beginnings, and new opportunities to learn and grow.

While many children can't wait to see their friends and meet their new teachers, the return to school can also bring anxiety, especially for students who struggle with reading and writing. They may worry about reading aloud in class, keeping up with classmates, or making mistakes in front of others.

One of the best ways to support your child is to help their teacher get to know them from the very beginning. A simple note sharing your child's strengths, challenges, interests, and any worries they may have can go a long way in building a strong home-school partnership.

As a former classroom teacher, I always appreciated when parents shared these insights. Understanding a child's unique needs helped me better support them from the very first day of school.

Stop Comparing Your Child’s Reading to Other Children ❤️

It’s so easy to compare, but every child learns to read on their own timeline.

Instead of asking, “Why isn’t my child reading like theirs?” ask, “Is my child making progress?”

Celebrate the small wins:
📖 One more word decoded.
✨ More confidence.
💪 Greater perseverance.

Those little steps add up to big growth.

If your child isn’t making meaningful progress over time, don’t ignore your instincts. The right instruction can change everything.

Keep your eyes on your child’s journey, not someone else’s.

It was such a pleasure meeting the incredible Shari Most with ColoREADo!

I always enjoy connecting with others who are passionate about improving literacy outcomes for children. It was inspiring to learn more about ColoREADo’s mission to ensure that every Colorado child has access to evidence-based literacy instruction and the support they need to become confident, successful readers.

I believe that every child can learn, persevere, and achieve, so it was especially meaningful to connect with an organization that shares the same commitment to helping children reach their full potential.

Helping isn’t always about giving the answer. Sometimes it’s about giving your child the confidence to keep trying. A few extra seconds of patience can build independence that lasts far beyond the day’s homework.

If your child continues to have difficulty despite practice and support, it may be a sign they need specialized reading instruction, not just more practice. That’s exactly why we’re here.

📚Helping or Hurting?

Your child gets stuck on a word...

Your first instinct is probably to say it for them.

We get it. You want to help ❤️.

But if we always tell children unknown words immediately, we take away the opportunity for their brains to do the work that builds strong readers.

Instead, try this:
✨ Pause.
✨ Give them a few seconds to think.
✨ Encourage them to say the sounds they know.

Even if they don't get it right the first time, they're practicing the skills that lead to lasting reading success.

If they still can't figure it out after trying, then absolutely provide the word, have them repeat it, and keep reading. The goal isn't frustration, it's giving them a chance to problem-solve first.

Remember: True learning happens in the struggle, not in the shortcut. Every time your child attempts to decode a word, they're strengthening the neural pathways that make reading easier over time.

If your child is struggling with many words, avoiding reading, becoming frustrated, or guessing instead of sounding words out, they may need more than encouragement- they may need specialized instruction.
