Mid-Carolina AHEC Achievement of population parity in South Carolina's health professions workforce.

We partner with academic institutions, medical facilities, and healthcare providers to support the education and retention of health professionals in the SC AHEC Mid-Carolina Region, especially in rural areas. Background Information:

Since 1972, the South Carolina Area Health Education Consortium (AHEC) has been assisting minority and underserved students to explore health careers. This long term commitment has been based on AHEC’s awareness that the under representation of racial and ethnic minorities in our state’s health care workforce significantly contributes to disparities in the health status and access to health care for some of SC’s most vulnerable residents. Mission:

To improve the quality and accessibility of health care for the communities of South Carolina through a system of community-academic partnerships whose central purpose is the recruitment, education, and retention of primary health care providers. Vision:

To be a model integrated and collaborative educational system that builds the capacity for optimal health in South Carolina

Our Aims:

Kershaw County Edition!

Thank you, Lugoff-Elgin High School, for allowing our HCP Coordinators to host a Virtual Reality Health Career Exploration Session today!

HCP Coordinator Whitney Amaker kicked off the session by introducing the Health Science Career Cluster and its 5 major subclusters that group related occupations, skills, and educational tracks.

Students chose from various health career simulations that aligned with their interests and skill set. Our pictured volunteer 'Assisted with a Knee Surgey.' Other students 'Perfomed a Blood Draw' and 'Helped at a Car Crash.'

Aiken County Edition!

Our very first Rural Health Careers Club session was a success!
This past Saturday, Mid-Carolina AHEC collaborated with Aiken County high school students for an engaging, hands-on IV therapy session! Students explored IV therapy techniques, learned more about the healthcare field, and gained valuable hands-on experience.

A special thank you to Teressa, Education Coordinator with Aiken Regional, for facilitating and sharing her knowledge and expertise with our students!

Happy !

Today, Mid-Carolina AHEC is honoring pharmacists and pharmacy professionals for their vital work in patient care and community health.

We are especially proud to recognize our AHEC Scholars who are working toward careers in pharmacy. These students are getting ready to join the next generation of healthcare professionals while gaining hands-on experience, working with others, and learning about the needs of the communities they will serve.

(Pt. 2) Health Careers Program Session | Juniors and Seniors 🩺

Special Operations Coordinator, Greg Brasington, of Lancaster County EMS brought an interactive presentation from the world of Emergency Medical Services!

(Pt. 1): Health Careers Program Session | Juniors and Seniors 🩺🩸

11th and 12th graders participated in an engaging, hands-on Blood Typing activity designed to introduce them to the importance of blood compatibility during transfusions.

Students mixed different colored simulated blood samples to determine which blood types could be safely mixed during a transfusion and which combinations were incompatible. This interactive activity allowed students to visualize blood compatibility and better understand why matching blood types is an important part of patient care.
