Rohr Chabad at F&M

Comments

Rabbi Elazar Green, spriritual advisor to the Rohr Chabad at F&M student group, brought the Sukkah Cupcake Truck to campus to celebrate Sukkot, a major Jewish festival held in the autumn that commemorates the sheltering of the Israelites in the wilderness. Chag Sameach!
Dr. Barbara K. Altmann
President, Franklin & Marshall College

Dear Dr. Altmann,

The Franklin & Marshall faculty who signed a letter condemning Israel for a variety of false allegations and narratives have swallowed shameful propaganda advanced by Human Rights Watch, B’tselem and other organizations. The categorization of “Apartheid” to describe anything in Israel is offensive and an absolute outrage.

Evenhandedness? What kind of response does absorbing more than 4,300 missiles deserve. Forty-three hundred!!! Where is the reference to the number of rockets fired by Hamas that fell short of Israel and killed 50 Palestinians? Do you know the locations from which these missiles are fired? Mostly hospitals, mosques, schools and homes. Who is oppressed when innocents are used as human shields?

Occupied territories? What are these faculty talking about? Gaza is not “occupied.” Areas A & B in the West Bank are not “occupied.” Have these advocates read the Oslo Accords, which have been broken. Area C is not “occupied,” and is under the governance of Israel. The Palestinians have rejected any opportunity to come to the negotiating table with Israel. There was a time over decades where Palestinians could have had a state in Gaza and about 93 percent of the West Bank. Those ships have sailed. Peace to them is simply the destruction of Israel. There’s no reversing 73 years of history. They made war with Israel and continue to wage war. So long as they are in such a state of war, they will continue to narrow any hope for a state.

Justice? The only justice sought by Hamas and Fatah in the parts of the West Bank are the destruction of the State of Israel, “from the river to the sea.”

Liberation? The people of Palestine are demonstrating against their own leadership. They are being held hostage by Hamas, Fatah and Hezbollah and a corrupt leadership of the Palestinian Authority, which cannot govern anyone. Where do 2 million Palestinians go for jobs? ISRAEL.

Expelled? Driven from their homes? This is utter nonsense. When Arabs rejected the Partition Plan of 1947, they chose to attack the Jews. They were defeated. The Jews told them to stay. They left the land set aside for them by the United Nations. No land was stolen. It is a falsehood. Ask the Arabs who sold their land at the time. The only freedom Palestinians enjoy is in Israel. Your faculty have no clue what they are talking about and have blindly accepted the hatred associated with the Nakba narrative. The only oppression that is being felt is at that of Palestinians at the hands of Hamas, Fatah and the PA.

If this is what your faculty truly believe, you may wonder what on earth they are actually teaching your students. If I had a son or daughter at Franklin & Marshall, I would never allow them to take a course with any of these faculty.

This is appalling. Let’s get one thing straight here. Israel is imperfect, but it as imperfect as any democracy. It is a pluralistic society, a model of diversity, including its LGBTQ community, with one of the world’s most robust economies and a leader in the arts. No Arab neighbor enjoys such freedom and diversity. Today, even Arab countries are growing frustrated by this 73-year-old act.

The College's dismissal of fears by Jewish students are your campus are insulting and show a complete lack of sensitivity. To most Jewish students, Israel isn't some political football. It is the lifeblood of the Jewish people for thousands of years. The moment someone tells us "not to worry" that is the time to begin worrying.

Respectfully,

Charles Kaufman
President, B’nai B’rith International

Question. Is there such a thing as a thumb model?

Because the person who is holding this matzah box wants to know.

In the meantime - if you're on campus and want to get to a socially distanced seder OR you want some delicious (well, it's matzah) handmade (that's true) Shmurah Matzah (from Israel) in a beautiful box that doubles as a seder plate - Let us know! First come first served. Before Shaina eats them all!
