Policy decisions made in Harrisburg and Washington eventually reach every school community. Those decisions help determine what resources schools receive and how districts respond to the needs of their students.

Dr. Alex Rohrer, Community School Director at Burrowes Elementary School, will have an opportunity to study that process more closely as a member of the 2026โ€“27 Pennsylvania Education Policy Fellowship Program!

The eight-month program is administered by The Education Policy and Leadership Center. It brings together professionals from across Pennsylvania whose work touches education and public policy. Since the program began in 1999, more than 700 leaders have completed the fellowship.

For Dr. Rohrer, the fellowship connects the relationships built each day at Burrowes with the larger decisions shaping public education across Pennsylvania. He plans to bring what he learns back to Lancaster and use it to strengthen the work already underway for Burrowes students.

Today, some of our students teamed up with The Edible Classroom to build some of our new garden beds!

Students then used measurements to calculate each bedโ€™s volume. Tons of teamwork, hands-on math, and plenty of fun too. These volume calculations show how measurement and math solve realโ€‘world problems like planning space, materials, and estimating how much youโ€™ll spend ๐Ÿ’ต.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Back-to-School Night Open House!

We loved reconnecting with familiar faces, welcoming new families, showcasing our learning spaces, and helping families connect with teachers and staff. We were also excited to bring together community partners, including our volunteer firefighters, library mobile center, township representatives, and many more, to share resources and build stronger connections.

Join us as we kick off a new school garden at Burrowes Elementary School!

We're building the first raised beds and could use helping hands. No gardening or construction experience required. All ages are welcome! Meet outside of the Activities Entrance (faces the cafeteria).

This event was originally scheduled for Monday, July 27.

This session serves as both the required Valued Volunteers training and an introduction to Together We Read, our districtwide initiative that connects volunteers with students to help strengthen reading skills. You'll receive volunteer information along with practical strategies and resources to support young readers.

The School District of Lancaster was represented at this yearโ€™s Building Solutions Conference at Pennsylvania Training and Technical Assistance Network in Harrisburg, where Burrowes Elementary School leaders shared how community partnerships are helping strengthen instruction and create meaningful learning experiences for students.

Hosted by Lancaster-Lebanon IU13 and Pennsylvania Department of Education's Statewide School Improvement Team, the annual conference brings together educators and school leaders from across the Commonwealth to exchange strategies, tools and successful practices that support continuous school improvement.

Burrowes Elementary School Principal Michele Duroni and Senior Community School Director Dr. Alex Rohrer presented โ€œUtilizing community partnerships to support academic goals within the school.โ€ Their session highlighted how intentional collaboration between schools and community organizations can support academic priorities, strengthen classroom instruction and increase student engagement.

The conference gave SDoL leaders an opportunity to share the work underway at Burrowes while learning from schools across Pennsylvania. The ideas brought back to Lancaster will help strengthen the districtโ€™s continued use of data, instruction and community partnerships to support student success.
