DNR Seeking Public Input On 2026 Deer Season
Provide Feedback Online Or In-Person Starting April 4

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the state’s Citizen Deer Advisory Councils are seeking public feedback on Wisconsin's deer management, including harvest quotas, season structure and more ahead of the 2026 deer season.

The archery and crossbow seasons open tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 13, and run through Sunday, Jan. 4, 2026 (archery/crossbow seasons continue through Jan. 31, 2026, in some Metro subunits and Farmland counties).

As you head out to the woods, be sure to keep safety in your sights and always use a harness, haul line and maintain three points of contact when getting in and out of your tree stand.

We also want to remind hunters that there have been updates to the deer management units (DMUs) for the 2025 hunting season. Refer to the updated maps on our Deer Hunting webpage linked below to see if your unit has changed.

Hey deer hunters: Bonus antlerless harvest authorizations for 2025 will be available for purchase online through Go Wild and at any DNR license sales location starting at 10 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 18, 2025.

Bonus authorizations are sold at a rate of one per person per day until sold out or until the 2025 deer hunting season ends. Bonus authorizations are $12 each for Wisconsin residents, $20 each for non-residents and $5 each for youth ages 11 and under.

The first three days of bonus sales are management zone-specific, and the fourth day is open to all zones:

– Aug. 18, 10 a.m. – Forest Zones (Northern and Central)
– Aug. 19, 10 a.m. – Central Farmland Zone
– Aug. 20, 10 a.m. – Southern Farmland Zone
– Aug. 21, 10 a.m. – All zones available

Due to realignment of the Northern and Central Forest Zones, there have been changes made to some deer management unit (DMU) borders for 2025. The DNR reminds hunters to consult the new state unit maps before making any purchases.

Deer hunting is about more than just making memories or filling a freezer. It plays a pivotal role in managing Wisconsin’s deer herd.

Hunting helps maintain deer populations and reduce the negative impacts of deer, such as crop damage, decreased forest regeneration and car accidents.

In addition, the timing of the deer hunting season is important as well. Reducing the population prior to the frigid winter temperatures means scarce food sources go further, allowing surviving deer less competition to stay healthy and strong into the spring.

Thinking about hunting this year? There are plenty of seasons open now and even more opening in October, like duck, pheasant and ruffed grouse.

So, what do you need to get started hunting? Here's a quick checklist:

– Take a learn to hunt or hunter education course
– Get the right license or permit for the animal you want to hunt
– Get the right harvest authorizations, stamps or tags
– Find a spot (pro tip: use our public lands mapping tool)
– Know how and when to register your harvest

We're looking for landowners to host hunters for the 2023 Gun Deer Hunt For Hunters With Disabilities, taking place Oct. 7-15, 2023 this year.

Participating landowners have opened their properties for this special hunt since 1992, providing opportunities for approximately 400 hunters each year.

To host a Gun Deer Hunt For Hunters With Disabilities, landowners must have at least 60 acres available and be able to host at least three hunters.
