During Read Across America Week, schools across the School District of Lancaster celebrate the power of reading and the many ways literacy can bring people together.
At Wickersham Elementary School, that celebration extended beyond the classroom walls as families gathered for a recent Literacy Night designed to highlight the joy of reading while encouraging students and families to create stories of their own.
The event welcomed Wickersham families into the school for an evening focused on reading and writing. The goal was to create an interactive experience where literacy could be shared between students and their families while demonstrating how books can inspire creativity and storytelling at home.
A special highlight of the evening was a guest reading from Lancaster Mayor Jaime Arroyo, who joined students and families to read the children’s book I Like Myself.
Through shared stories, collaborative writing, and a celebration of their school community, Wickersham families experienced firsthand how literacy can strengthen connections and inspire learning that continues far beyond the classroom.
Way to go Wickersham Wildcats!

Every week Wickersham celebrates a staff member who consistently illustrates and showcases the values of Wickersham through their staff charter. These “Charter Champions” receive a certificate and are cheered on at every faculty meeting…
Inspired by Vic Fangio, Defensive Coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles, on what he does for his players, Mrs. Rivera added to the celebration this year by making her “gravy”. Each “Charter Champion” was celebrated today by “not just winning the Charter… but by starting the gravy train.”
Congratulations Wickersham Wildcats for always being supportive, confident, respectful, and connected. 🐾
