Life finds a way! We are headed into nutrient removal in our WW II Class. Our Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) is currently generating good effluent we are now using to irrigate plants as part of a nutrient study. Day 4 and our first seed has sprouted. We are growing grass, two types of lettuce, and beans. When complete, students will assess the effectiveness of using land application of effluent as both a source of irrigation water and nutrients for crops.

Thanks to Nathan Laucks and all of the staff at Inframark for hosting our 2nd Year students at the Borough of Lititz Drinking Water Plant. It was a busy day balancing our tour with the ongoing upgrades to the plant automation and control system at the plant. It was great to learn more about the Source Water Protection Program for this water supply, and all of the efforts at the plant to provide safe and tasty drinking water to Borough and surrounding Warwick Township residents.

Thanks to Allison Zechman and the staff at City of Lancaster’s Advanced Wastewater Treatment Facility for being such gracious hosts. Our 2nd year students enjoyed learning more about the significant capital investments that City of Lancaster has been making recently at the facility, and its long-term commitment to doing its part for a shared vision of clean and clear water in Lancaster County by 2040.

A big thank you to Tina Meyers and her staff at New Holland Authority for hosting our 1st Year WET students today. We were able to see first-hand how this community is protecting Mill Creek and the Chesapeake Bay Watershed through investment and operation of advanced nutrient removal treatment technologies and the Class A, Exceptional Quality Biosolids product they generate for beneficial reuse.
