I live on a small ranch in unincorporated Los Angeles County with my husband Larry, son Max, puppies Rudy & Valentino and kitties Dixie & Trixie. We have amazing views as far as the eye can see and plenty of room to roam and operate our tractor! In the Spring I work at the California State Poppy Reserve where I share my love of nature with visitors from around the world. I also have a passion for

Another day of clean up, clear out and prep in the courtyard garden.

Today in the courtyard was day two of clean up. The students pulled the old vegetation out of 3 beds, harvested the sunflower heads, pulled the stalks and cut them to size for composting. We harvested amaranth, pruned the citrus and used the leaf blower to clear the area. And Mr Touchtone may have been juked by a chicken!

After a few months off, the garden is looking rough. We still have some peppers, tomatoes, watermelon and amaranth growing.

Today the students harvested the remaining lemons on the tree along with popcorn we planted in the spring. Then the students headed over to the STEM lab with the stalks to compost and the over ripe cucumbers to feed the chickens.

We checked on the potatoes we planted in the spring and they did not make it.

I turned on the water so now it will most likely rain lol.

Last official session in the courtyard garden this year.

We harvested tomatoes, peppers, radish, strawberry and blueberries.
We had a special guest drop by, Dr Gibson the school principal!

The students took a last group picture and celebrated the in the garden with sidewalk chalk and bubbles!

We completed planting the 3 sisters by adding pumpkin and beans. Big Max and little Max planted the Big Max variety pumpkins!! We added some carrots, beans, turnips and beets in the large garden.

We should have a thriving garden to return to in August!

Getting the courtyard garden ready for summer!

The students harvested the tomatoes, 1 carrot, peppers and snow peas that were ready.

Then the students removed the winter crops from the large bed, added compost (from yesterday’s luncheon processed by our Lomi countertop composter) some garden soil and planted beans (purple, rattlesnake, blue lake).

The boys took the spent weeds to the Stem lab to be composted there.

The corn and soy beans are looking good. The sunflowers are well over 6 feet tall. We have lots of lemons on the tree and two full bushes of blueberries!

Today in the Courtyard Garden at Gulfport High School we added a Three sisters garden. We observed, picked and ate tomatoes, snow peas (the students like the sugar snaps) strawberries and even a jalapeño! We prepped a new bed and took the compost to the STEM lab.

This week we harvested the garlic bed. It probably could have used more time but we are nearing the end of school and need to plant something in there!

The corn and soy beans are 4” high!
The tomatoes, peppers and sunflowers are thriving!

The students found some strawberries and snow peas and ate them right off the plants!

For Earth day the students got to take home a plant. Most chose watermelon, pumpkin, or sunflower. A few chose cucumber, arugula, okra!

The students weeded, identified tomatoes, picked and ate sugar snap peas.

The corn and soy beans planted last week have sprouted we have the start of some cucumbers and even found a bean. The fruit trees are also coming along nicely.

While weeding the garlic patch, one student offered $1 to another student if he would eat raw garlic. He had to pay up!!
