Grant County Master Gardeners The Master Gardeners and Friends organization in Grant County is an all-volunteer organization.

The Grant County Master Gardeners and Friends aim to foster knowledge sharing and hands- on gardening experiences while providing educational services to their communities. The purpose of this group is for horticulture education to supplement the effort of the University of Wisconsin-Extension Program, and thereby provide information on horticultural and environmental stewardship to the residents

of Grant County. Master Gardeners are trained volunteers, educated through the University of Wisconsin-Extension staff, that offer their local community gardening information and education opportunities.

Before you plant that favorite garden perennial, make sure it will not take over your landscape!

An aggressive plant is a species that spreads rapidly by seed, stems, rhizomes, roots, or other means and can quickly dominate an area, often crowding out desirable plants. A few aggressive plants that can spread rapidly and may become w**ds include lily-of-the-valley, bee balm, pink evening primrose, and periwinkle.

From the cutting board to the compost bin, improve soil health with food scraps. Whether you choose to compost indoors, outdoors, or with earthworms, a healthy compost pile needs a balance of materials. Brown scraps like nutshells, crushed eggshells, and woodchips add carbon. While green scraps such as grass clippings, vegetables, and chicken/livestock manure introduce nitrogen.

Troubleshooting:
Smelly Pile?
There is too much nitrogen.

Materials not breaking down?
There is too much carbon.

Pest lurking?
Eliminate prohibited items like meat, bones, diseased plants, and w**d seed.

Grant County Master Gardeners will meet Thursday, August 13 at 6:30 pm at Nancy Ashmore's place. You may notice that is a week earlier than what the normal meeting date is. That is because of the Grant County Fair which is that week. Nancy will present a program on blueberries. She will discuss planting, maintaining, harvesting, and wintering over. The blueberry crop was not prolific this season due to the weather. But as gardeners we can all relate to the weather we have had this year. Nancy's address is 4301 McGhan Road, Fennimore.

Applications for the 2027 Wild Ones Lorrie Otto Seeds for Education Program are now open. 🌱

For nearly 30 years, this program has helped schools, libraries, nature centers, youth organizations, and community groups create native plant gardens that become living classrooms.

New this year: most awards will be provided as native plant grants, helping schools, libraries, nature centers, youth organizations, and community groups establish native plant learning spaces with regionally appropriate plants selected for their project. We've also streamlined the application process to make it easier to apply.
