🩺🐾 IT'S OFFICIALLY SURGERY TIME!! 🐾🩺

Our 2nd-year Veterinary Technology students hit a HUGE milestone this week: they officially began assisting in surgery!

After 6 weeks of preparation, practicing their skills, learning surgical protocols, and getting ready for the operating room, it was FINALLY time to put all that hard work into action!

But the learning doesn't start in the operating room! Our students also put their knowledge from previous courses to work by performing pre-surgical blood work to help evaluate each patient's health and determine whether they were appropriate candidates for anesthesia and surgery. Talk about connecting the dots between classroom learning and real-world patient care! 🙌

From surgical scrubbing and maintaining aseptic technique to monitoring anesthesia and assisting the surgical team, our students gain valuable hands-on experience while learning the importance of teamwork, communication, and patient safety!

❤️🐾 And the best part? We're helping animals in need! At Dallas College, we LOVE working with our shelter partners by providing spay-and-neuter services. These procedures give our students invaluable clinical experience while supporting our shelter partners and helping reduce pet overpopulation. It's a WIN-WIN! 🐶🐱💕

We are SO proud of how far these future veterinary technicians have come! The nerves, excitement, teamwork, and smiles say it all! 🥹💙

Six weeks of preparation ➡️ One BIG step toward becoming veterinary technicians! 🎓🐾

🐐 Hands-on learning in Large Animal Assisting!

Dr. Nazworth worked alongside our second-year students during goat castrations, giving students the opportunity to apply their classroom knowledge in a real large-animal setting.

Experiences like this allow students to practice patient preparation, monitoring, restraint, surgical assisting, teamwork, and post-procedure care while building confidence with small ruminant patients. These hands-on labs are an important part of preparing our students for the variety of species they may encounter in veterinary medicine. 💚🐐

🐾💙 Learning to Keep It Low-Stress! 💙🐾

Our veterinary technology students have been putting Fear Free and low-stress handling techniques into practice while obtaining vital parameters on their patients. From slowing things down to using treats, distraction, and gentle restraint, students are learning that how we handle our patients matters just as much as the task we are performing. 🐶🩺

Some of our semester patients also received their booster vaccines this week! 💉 Students had the opportunity to connect their hands-on skills with the importance of preventative medicine and keeping our patients protected.

These experiences help our students build confidence while learning two important pieces of patient care: reducing fear, anxiety, and stress whenever possible and understanding the role vaccinations play in protecting animal health. 💙

And yes… sometimes the secret to a successful appointment really is a lick mat and a good snack. 😂🐾

🐐🧤🔬 Hooves, gloves, and parasite ova…oh my!

Our second-year students are getting surgery-ready by mastering how to properly scrub in, gown, and glove before assisting with surgery and anesthesia. Sterile technique is serious business, even when putting on sterile gloves feels like an Olympic event where touching the wrong thing means immediate disqualification! 😂🧤

They also learned the large-animal ropes, quite literally! This week’s patients were goats, and our students practiced hoof trims, blood draws, and administering oral medications. They handled it all like true professionals…or should we say, they were the G.O.A.T.s of large-animal lab? 🐐💉

Meanwhile, our first-year students were living the glamorous laboratory life: running fecals and searching for parasites! 💩🔬 Their microscopic investigation uncovered both hookworm and whipworm eggs. Nothing says “future veterinary technician” quite like getting excited over something found in p**p! 😂

From the operating room to the barn to the microscope, our future veterinary technicians are building confidence, sharpening their skills, and getting their hands dirty, sometimes literally, one hands-on experience at a time! 💙🐾

🐾 What have our Dallas College Vet Tech students been up to this week?

Our first-year students practiced canine and feline restraint and discovered that collecting a free-catch urine sample requires teamwork, perfect timing, and the willingness to stand in a very questionable location with a cup. 😂💧

Meanwhile, our second-year students officially entered their IV catheter era. Steady hands, deep breaths, and plenty of practice as they move one step closer to a busy semester of assisting with surgeries! 💉😅

Dante, our Chief Sploot Officer, would also like everyone to have a splooting good weekend! This handsome boy is currently available for adoption and is ready to bring expert-level sploots, big smiles, and plenty of personality to his future family. 🐶❤️

Stay tuned to see what our students and their four-legged helpers get into next week!
