What a night for our school community!

Hosted by the Parents' Association, our annual All-School Picnic is always a highlight of the fall calendar — and this year’s gathering was no exception.

From our Lower Schoolers enjoying the inflatables, balloon animals, and crafts, to Middle School students making and strengthening friendships, to Upper School classes gearing up for this year's Color Wars, seeing everyone come together to start the year illustrates the incredible joy and strength of our school community.

A sincere thank you to the LCDS PA and the many dedicated parent volunteers who donated their time to set up, grilling, crafts, and clean-up for this wonderful evening!

Our campus STEAM Garden is a vibrant space where students can harvest fresh produce (which is then used in the meals served in our Dining Commons!) and observe the natural cycles of growth firsthand. It's also, of course, a place of great beauty.

This week, our Middle School photography class took their lesson outdoors, using the changing light and rich textures of the garden to explore the skills of focus and composition. By blending art, science, and hands-on cultivation, we give our students space to stay curious, ask big questions, and take pride in what they create.

A milestone worth celebrating! Our new 5th/6th grade field hockey team scored their first-ever goal, thanks to Gabby H. '33, and went on to earn their first team win with a 2–1 victory.

This year, we're intentionally expand athletic opportunities for our younger students – creating more ways for them to build skills, confidence, and community through sport. Go Cougars!

When a student sees the pattern hidden inside of a complex problem, math transforms from a set of rules on a page to a puzzle waiting to be solved.

That spark of curiosity is at the heart of our Lower School math curriculum: Eureka Math².

From Junior Kindergarten through 5th grade, our LS classrooms focus on deep mastery and eschew quick memorization. Instead of skimming through several topics each term, our students spend weeks exploring a single mathematical concept, ensuring they truly understand the logic behind the numbers before moving on. Through visual models, hands-on tools, and low-stress daily warm-ups that replace traditional speed tests, our young learners are building genuine fluency and problem-solving skills that will serve them for years to come.

Today, our Lower School classrooms have transformed into a vibrant display of originality and imagination as we celebrate International Dot Day!

Inspired by Peter H. Reynolds’ 2003 children’s book about finding the courage to make your mark, many of our LS students arrived in homemade, dot-themed outfits that capture their unique spirit. In the days leading up to Dot Day, our students dove into special art projects, designed to help them bring their biggest ideas to life. It’s a true joy to see our youngest learners embrace their creativity with great aplomb.

LCDS Parents/Caregivers, you are invited to join Catherine Haddad, certified yoga instructor & wellness coordinator at LCDS, for a one hour of yoga practice each Thursday afternoon. Experience a traditional yoga practice that combines postures, breathing, and meditation to bring your body and mind into harmony. All levels are welcome.

First class — today, Thursday, September 10th.
Weekly on Thursdays, 4-5 p.m. @ the Dance Studio.
Class is free, but space is limited. Please RSVP by emailing Mrs. Haddad.

The field trip is as quintessential a school memory as No. 2 pencils and yellow buses.

To mark the end of our first full week of classes, our Upper Schoolers headed off campus to connect, recharge, and explore. The Freshmen discovered a new lens on Lancaster City with a tour of the Thaddeus Stevens & Lydia Hamilton Smith Center for History and Democracy, a stop at Central Market, and a look at local art galleries. Sophomores paired hands-on learning at a local farm with a round of mini golf, while Juniors spent the day exploring campus life at Gettysburg College. Our Seniors made the trek to Echo Hill Outdoor School for their annual overnight trip.

Stepping outside of the classroom at the start of the year gives our students the space and setting necessary to build lasting friendships, gain new perspectives, and set a cohesive tone for the months ahead.
