Henry Louis Canty (February 29, 1944 – 1981) was a beloved educator, mentor, community leader, devoted husband, father, and proud member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Born in Pinewood, South Carolina, he dedicated his life to faith, family, education, and service.

After earning his degree in Elementary Education from South Carolina State College and later a Master’s Degree from Winthrop College, Mr. Canty taught in the Lancaster County School District for 16 years. Known for his passion for teaching, he treated every student as if they were his own child. His kindness, mentorship, and commitment to young people left a lasting impact on generations of Lancaster students.

Beyond the classroom, Mr. Canty was a hardworking family man whose strong work ethic and dedication to providing for his loved ones inspired everyone around him. He was admired for his character, leadership, and genuine love for people. Whether serving his church, supporting his fraternity, mentoring youth, or uplifting his community, he made a difference everywhere he went.

Southside residents also fondly remember seeing Louis driving through the neighborhood in his beloved bright yellow Volkswagen Beetle. That iconic car became a familiar sight and a symbol of the warmth, pride, and friendly spirit he brought to the Southside community.

Though his life was cut short at the age of 37, the legacy of Louis Canty continues through his family, former students, and the countless lives he touched. His influence remains a treasured part of Southside history and a shining example of service, excellence, and community pride.
