🚀Advice to students by students!

Is Veritas Scholars Academy rigorous and challenging? Compared to the average modern American standard, absolutely! But that does not make it impossible – it makes it more valuable.

Classical education is a return to the level of education that was expected of young people historically; as students today put in the effort, they too can rise to the occasion!

What advice do real-world classical students have for their peers?

➡️Learn to manage your time well.

➡️Know that you’ll make mistakes, and treat them as a learning experience rather than a failure.

➡️Be an active participant in class; interact with questions, classmates, and teachers.

➡️Remind yourself that even the subjects that you dislike right now will add value to your life; They wouldn’t be required otherwise. You may not see the value yet, but you will in the coming years.

➡️Talk to your teachers! Join their office hours, ask them questions in class, and never be scared to reach out for extra help – that’s what they are here for.

➡️Interact with your fellow students and build friendships; don’t let your fears hold you back!

➡️Don’t hold onto stress; use it as a signal to take a break or reach out to classmates, teachers, or parents for an outside perspective.

➡️Join a study group with your peers.

➡️Pay attention to all the life experiences and advice your teachers share; you’ll learn so much about navigating the world as you grow up.

➡️You CAN do this, and when you get to the end of your education, you’ll be so thankful that you did.

If you’re brand new to Veritas Scholars Academy this year and feeling a bit underwater as you adjust to the schedule and workloads, we just want to let you know you’re not alone, and it does get better! ❤️

Janet is a long-time homeschool mom who has been doing VSA live classes with her kids for the past 15 years, and after several successful graduates, she has this encouragement to share:

“I want to encourage everyone to hang in there. There is a learning curve of 6-9 weeks. Things will become routine and get better.

I know it might feel overwhelming and frustrating, but I guarantee that it is worth it.

I have a middle schooler now, and this is his second year; he said, “It gets easier.”

I have two who have graduated. I have been where you are, and not only did my girls receive an excellent education, but they learned so many life skills that are serving them well as adults today.

I remember those long days of homework and Omnibus (which, in the end, is a class they both say they are glad they took).

Remember, your child is in the crosshairs of Satan’s bow, and he would like nothing more than to see you take them somewhere else. Hang in there, fellow parents.”

It’s not uncommon to see students drop out of classical schools because they believe they will be better equipped to pursue the NCAA or professional athletics elsewhere. This is a huge misconception and couldn’t be further from the truth.

Why is a classical education important for rising athletes? Here are our top 3 observations:

🏆 1. Athletes profit from the examples and inspiration from Scripture and the Great Books.

Athletics is about having “heart.” There is no better training environment for growing your heart than reading the Scriptures and the Great Books.

🏆 2. The Culture of the Athletic World Can Be Dangerous to Students Without The Right Training.

Many athletes never receive the education that helps them be discerning with their time, money, and abilities. They could use their wealth to bless Christ’s Kingdom in massive ways, but far too often, the money vanishes, or the athletes are taken advantage of by crafty people with deceitful intent. Classical education helps them approach choices and relationships with godly wisdom and good stewardship.

🏆 3. Athletes must understand the influence of their calling and how to use it for Christ.

Athletes must prepare to use their cultural influence, even amid some ungodly attention that athletes receive. Our culture worships sports and great athletes. While this is wrong, it does not make athletics an ungodly calling, but it does make it a dangerous one where someone’s impact for or against Christ can be amplified.

“What defines courage? Many would picture battles between heroes, in which the heroes do not back down from the villain, even though they may have no small amount of trepidation. Others would picture the soldiers constantly charging Normandy beach, even as they watched their friends and comrades being shot down by German fire. It is easy to define and watch courage during movies, war situations, or literature. But what about the heroes in everyday life? Can the first responders who keep us safe be ignored?”
