At George Washington Elementary School, being a Community School means building relationships with the people and organizations who help our students succeed, in school and beyond the classroom.

Washington Elementary recently welcomed community partners for its State of the Union and brought families into the school for Back to School Night. Partners stayed for the evening, giving families a chance to connect with the organizations that support their school community.

Community partners help connect families with resources and opportunities, while families bring knowledge of their children that helps guide our work. Making room for those relationships is part of what being a Community School looks like in practice.

We’re looking for coaches who want to help shape the next generation of McCaskey Athletics.

The School District of Lancaster is hiring for several coaching positions across our middle and high school programs. These roles work directly with student-athletes as they develop their skills and prepare to compete at the next level.

Current openings include:

• Freshmen Boys Basketball Assistant Coach at McCaskey High School
• JHJV Boys Basketball Coach at Reynolds Middle School
• Junior High JV Head Cheerleading Coaches at Lincoln, Hazel I. Jackson, Reynolds, and Wheatland Middle School-

A conversation with a local business owner or community organization can give a family somewhere to turn when a question comes up later. At Buchanan Park, the Lancaster Hispanic Chamber of Commerce's inaugural Hispanic Community Fair made room for those introductions while celebrating Hispanic heritage.

Families could explore what participating organizations had to offer while spending time with neighbors during Hispanic Heritage Month. Bringing those opportunities into a familiar public space gave residents an informal way to meet the people behind local businesses and services.

SDoL thanks the Lancaster Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and everyone who helped make its inaugural fair possible. As our schools recognize Hispanic Heritage Month, this gathering offers a useful reminder to keep learning about the people our students call neighbors and the work they’re doing across Lancaster. Those relationships can help our schools better understand the families we serve.

The School District of Lancaster's Families in Transition program, known as FIT, earned 102 out of 102 possible points and a 100% rating during its latest Education for Children and Youth Experiencing Homelessness (ECYEH)'s monitoring review!

The work is guided by the federal McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, which protects the educational rights of children and youth experiencing homelessness. Pennsylvania’s Education for Children and Youth Experiencing Homelessness (ECYEH)'s program helps ensure those students have access to a free and appropriate public education while reducing disruptions to their education.

For SDoL, the state monitoring process examines how those responsibilities translate into practice. Pennsylvania Department of Education conducts the monitoring on a three-year cycle. SDoL was previously monitored in 2023 and expects its next review in 2029.

REMINDER: Tonight, an Act 34 public hearing will begin at 5 p.m. at Lincoln Middle School, 1001 Lehigh Avenue, to review plans for the proposed new consolidated elementary school on the Hamilton Elementary School School property.

Families applying for SDoL PreK can now complete the process in one place, thanks to a collaboration that helped earn the district its third national recognition through Edupoint’s Synergy Achievement Awards.

Our Enterprise Applications team within the Office of Technology worked with SDoL PreK and Enrollment staff to simplify a process that once required families to enter much of the same information twice. More than 400 applications have been processed through the new workflow, which lets staff review the same information and keep enrollment moving.

“IT created the tool, and our SDoL PreK and Enrollment teams helped turn that tool into a process that works for our families and staff,” said Marsha Riddick, manager of Child Accounting and Enrollment.

The latest award also recognizes work to preserve system knowledge by embedding guidance within Synergy. It follows a 2025 award for McCaskey's digital hall pass system, which saves more than $20,000 annually, and a 2021 honorable mention.

Congratulations to our Enterprise Applications team and the colleagues who helped bring these projects to life! Their work makes everyday tasks easier for families and staff across SDoL.

We’re hiring an Assistant Director of Student Services to help strengthen school counseling and college and career readiness across the School District of Lancaster!

This leadership position will guide districtwide programs that support students from prekindergarten through graduation, including behavioral health services, crisis response and preparation for life after McCaskey High School. The role will also work closely with staff and community partners to expand opportunities and ensure every student can access the support they need.

Looking for an after-school program for your child? Boys & Girls Club of Lancaster offers programming for young people ages 6–18 at locations throughout Lancaster.

Activities vary by location, but members may take part in sports, art, STEM, mentorship, community service and workforce development. The Club also serves a hot dinner each night, prepared by its own chef at the Jack Walker Clubhouse on Lemon Street.
