This student poem has us feeling cozy and ready for Fall! 😊🍂
🍁The Hymn of Autumn by Phoebe 🍁
Wind rings the leaves like dainty golden bells,
And blows the purple morning-glory horns.
The rhythmic, gentle falling of acorns
Blends with the autumn music of the dells.
A gust of wildest wind the music swells;
A bird with song the merry air adorns.
The draperies of crimson leaf and thorns
Draw back. The majesty my breathing quells.
As all the saints of God do cast their crowns,
The trees of His creation toss their leaves,
For words cannot their boundless praise enclose.
The chorus from the woods pours to the downs.
Who says that, in the autumn, nature grieves?
Instead, it best of all God’s greatness knows.
This poem was originally written for Mrs. Cannon’s poetry course at Veritas Scholars Academy.
This course takes students on a poetic journey through time, introducing them to the great poets of English verse, beginning with the Anglo-Saxon poets and ending with contemporary spoken-word poets. Students will uncover the Christian roots of English poetry, discover why Shakespeare rhymed “proved” and “loved” in his famous Sonnet 116, explore writing poetry in different meters and forms, and even guide students to workshop their own poetry with their peers.
This course is also eligible for college credit for junior and senior students participating in our Dual Enrollment program!
