The 3’s and Pre-K classes are focusing on obedience this month.
As parents, one of the most important things we can teach our children is obedience. During the preschool years, children are learning that there are rules, boundaries, expectations, and consequences. But obedience is more than simply getting our children to do what we say.
We are helping shape their hearts to understand what it means to trust and follow God. ❤️
How Can We Teach Obedience to Preschoolers?
Preschoolers are still developing self-control and learning how to manage big emotions. Obedience won’t always happen perfectly—and that’s okay.
Here are some simple ways to teach it:
1. Give clear, simple instructions.
Instead of giving several directions at once, give one simple instruction at a time.
2. Explain the “why” when appropriate.
“God wants us to be kind because He wants us to love others.”
3. Give opportunities to practice.
Everyday routines—cleaning up toys, sharing, waiting, using gentle hands, and listening—are opportunities to practice obedience.
4. Praise the heart, not just the behavior.
“You listened the first time! You made a good choice to obey.”
5. Be consistent and loving.
Children need boundaries they can understand and parents who lovingly follow through.
6. Teach grace when they fail.
When your child disobeys, use the moment to teach rather than simply punish. Help them recognize what happened, make it right, ask forgiveness, and try again.

Dear God,
Thank You for the precious children You have entrusted to us. Help us teach them to listen, obey, and trust You.
Give us patience when obedience is difficult. Help us remember that our children are still learning and growing. Give us wisdom to set loving boundaries, consistency to follow through, and grace when they make mistakes.
Most importantly, help us model obedience in our own lives. May our children see that we follow You because we love You and trust You.
Shape our children’s hearts to desire what is good, choose what is right, and follow You as they grow.
