Students from German courses at Franklin and Marshall College got together last night for Spaghettieis. Always a great way to start the semester!

We have a wonderful group of 6 F&M seniors who are working with the German faculty as preceptors in German 101 and 201 this fall! The preceptors serve as teaching assistants in the classroom, hold office hours, and act as mentors for their fellow German learners. It's shaping us to be a great fall semester on campus!

We are thrilled to announce that Katie Pippenger, F&M class of 2026, will spend the 2026-27 academic year in Klagenfurt, Austria. She will be serving as a English Teaching Assistant through the prestigious Fulbright Austria program. Congratulations, Katie!

15 F&M students in "German Legends and Tales" presented their final creative projects for the course, which included original fairy tales, a choreographed dance, a website on the Faust legend in metal music, and (pictured here) a zine, a comic, a collaged fashion magazine, a collection of puzzles, and board games!

Our alumna speaker at this year's National German Honor Society induction and awards ceremony was Julia Kreuzer. Julia graduated from F&M in 2023 with a double major and German and Environmental Science. After spending 2023-24 in Germany as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant, she has been working in Washington, D.C. This fall, she will enter a Master's program in Environmental Management at the Yale School of the Environment. Congratulations, Julia!

As we close out the semester, a look back to our annual German student award ceremony and induction into Delta Phi Alpha, the National German College Honor Society. We celebrated with Raclette and, of course, cake! Herzlichen Glückwunsch to all of our wonderful awardees and inductees!

It's a new year and we're checking in with Emma Rose Harty, F&M'25.
Emma is serving as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in Germany. She is placed in two elementary schools in the state of Saxony, where she helps the English teachers in each school for grades 3 and 4. Some responsibilities include clarifying pronunciation, sharing cultural features of the U.S.A., and encouraging students to practice speaking English. She reports that it’s really unique to learn the nuances of the German school system while assisting the teachers. In her free time, she enjoys taking a few courses at a nearby University and getting involved in artistic endeavors within the city of Chemnitz.

Two F&M senior German majors, Gabriel Butler and Katie Pippenger, presented their Senior Capstone Portfolios at the end of the fall 2025 semester. They detailed the paths that the study of German had taken them over the past four years and gave fellow students and community members a tour of their portfolio websites. The Senior Capstone Portfolio is a brand new requirement of the F&M German major and includes a personal statement and reflection, a language self-assessment, and examples of work completed in German courses (written, oral, and creative). Congratulations to Gabe and Katie!
