Two F&M senior German majors, Gabriel Butler and Katie Pippenger, presented their Senior Capstone Portfolios at the end of the fall 2025 semester. They detailed the paths that the study of German had taken them over the past four years and gave fellow students and community members a tour of their portfolio websites. The Senior Capstone Portfolio is a brand new requirement of the F&M German major and includes a personal statement and reflection, a language self-assessment, and examples of work completed in German courses (written, oral, and creative). Congratulations to Gabe and Katie!

With Commencement coming up this weekend, we wanted to share some photos from our annual F&M German awards ceremony and induction into Delta Phi Alpha, the National German Honor Society. Students enjoyed Raclette and remarks from our alumni speaker Philip Ehrig (F&M '13).

On Friday, October 18, we hosted the second German American Day at F&M! More than 250 high school students of German from 12 schools traveled to campus to participate in a wide range of fun and educational German-themed workshops. F&M students in German 462 (Faris Grbic, Emma Rose Harty, and Ethan Mazurek) designed activities for a session on "German Immigration to PA and the Six Nations, 1700-1776." Thanks to Mariah Ligas and all who made the day a success!

We took an F&M German field trip to the 1719 Museum in Willow Street, just south of Lancaster. We toured the Hans Herr House, the oldest surviving structure in Lancaster County, and the Lancaster Longhouse, a full-sized replica of an indigenous domestic structure.

F&M German students celebrated the start of the new semester with Spaghetti-Eis!

Yasmin Nicholas, F&M '24, is the recipient of this year's M. Joseph Buehrle prize, given each year to a senior who has demonstrated excellence in the study of German. Yasmin graduated summa cm laude with a double major in German and Mathematics and a Music Performance minor. Yasmin received a scholarship from the AATG to participate in the Goethe-Institut's Sommerakademie Globales Lehren und Lernen, which will take her to Dresden for 10 days in June. Starting in the fall she will be living in Linz, Austria and working as a Fulbright English-language teaching assistant. Congratulations Yasmin!

Julia Kreuzer, F&M'23, has been spending this year as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in Rheinland-Pfalz. She sent this message:

This year I have been working at a Berufsschule in Rheinland-Pfalz as an English Teaching Assistant. In the classroom I am involved in lessons in a variety of ways like doing classroom warm-ups, answering vocabulary and pronunciation questions, and presenting about American cultural topics. In January I taught students about Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the presidential primary elections, and American green card lottery system. My placement has also reconnected me with long-time family friends that I hadn’t seen in years! I have also participated in US Embassy Meet US Program, where I get to visit other German schools in my area and talk with more students about American history and culture, like the history of women’s rights in the US. In my free time I have gotten to explore Germany with other Fulbrighters, seeing places like Freiburg, Nuremberg, and Zugspitze!
