The Stamp Game in Montessori:

This material is typically introduced when children are about 4.5-5 years old and have worked with concrete math materials, such as the Golden Bead Material, number rods, and Sandpaper Numbers.

The Montessori Stamp Game aims to support children in transitioning from a concrete understanding of the decimal system—using golden beads for collective exercises—to a more abstract comprehension. Additionally, it introduces them to the concepts of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with multi-digit numbers.

Unlike the previous math materials the children have worked with prior to the Stamp Game, the control of error with this activity is the child’s own understanding!

In the Montessori Curriculum our teachers cultivate experiences and opportunities for spontaneous joy coupled with intentional learning. Joy reveals itself through busy, natural learning where children are free to move about and talk to one another, a place where community flourishes along with individual learning. Children who freely choose their work and develop their own inner teacher are happy children. They find comfort, routine and joy through the very process of their work. In whatever form it takes, concentrated work is the key to a child’s joy in school.

Starting in our Ākulikuli classroom (18 months-3 years), children are encouraged to do things for themselves like feeding, dressing, brushing teeth, toileting, and preparing simple snacks. These tasks may seem small, but they help children develop important life skills such as coordination, concentration, and confidence.

One of the core principles of a true Montessori education is the 3-year cycle—a unique and intentional structure that provides children with an uninterrupted, multi-year learning experience.

At Hala Kahiki Montessori School of Lāna’i we follow the 3 year cycle and within this structure:

First-year students enter as the youngest members of the class, absorbing knowledge and learning from older peers.

Second-year students continue refining their skills, gaining confidence, and preparing for leadership.

Third-year students experience a “culminating year”, where they take on leadership roles, mentor younger classmates, and fully internalize the concepts they’ve been exploring.

This cycle is intentional and essential to the children’s development. It allows them to progress at their own pace, revisit concepts as needed, and build deep, lasting knowledge—a foundation that will set them up for success in elementary school and beyond.

Maria Montessori believed that educating children to care for their environment is crucial for a better world.

On a daily basis, children in the Montessori classroom find joy in helping care for the environment with caring for the classroom (dusting, window washing, table scrubbing, leaf polishing, metal polishing, flower arranging, and more).

Caring for the environment teaches children that their actions impact the shared spaces around them. For example, forgetting to water the plants can cause them to wilt, or not putting away materials can make it harder for others to work.
Montessori classrooms are carefully prepared to support these activities. Children learn that keeping things clean, organized, and beautiful benefits everyone. They experience a deep sense of belonging and pride in contributing to their community, skills that carry into life at home and beyond.

By encouraging care of self and the environment, Montessori education fosters capable, respectful, and thoughtful individuals who are empowered to make a positive impact in their world.

No matter how you slice it, food preparation and cooking are part of the Montessori curriculum. When children cook in the classroom they are participating in many developmental activities. Cooking calls into play a number of skills used simultaneously. Children love the process of preparing, cooking, seeing the finished dish, and then eating something delicious.

In Hawaiʻi, this season aligns beautifully with Makahiki, a traditional time of peace, rest, and gratitude. Historically, Makahiki was a period when conflict paused, communities gathered, and attention shifted toward caring for one another and honoring the abundance of the land.

Aloha Families,

Due to severe weather conditions impacting the state and Lānai City, Hala Kahiki Montessori School will be closed tomorrow, Monday, February 9.

This decision follows Governor Josh Green’s announcement and aligns with the statewide closure of Hawaiʻi State Department of Education (HIDOE) schools and offices in response to current storm conditions.

The safety of our children, families, and staff is always our top priority. We appreciate your understanding and flexibility as we navigate weather-related closures.

Please stay safe, and we will continue to communicate any updates as they become available. We look forward to welcoming everyone back once conditions improve.

We had an exciting visit from our very own community member! A pet tortoise named “TORTUGA”. The children got to learn fun facts about tortoise, feed him veggies and after the visit got to enjoy a veggie platter just like the tortoise! What an exciting visit!

On December 12 we celebrated our 3rd Annual Winter Movie Night! Our families joined us under the stars with beach chairs,blankets and popcorn to watch “The Grinch”
