Splash Floating Classroom SPLASH Floating Classroom is an Educational and Environmental 501(c)3 non-profit organization. There are many potential lessons to be learned on the water.

In September 2004 the first class of students boarded our first floating classroom, SPLASH Steamboat. The steamboat was a replica of an 1800's sternwheeler, and served us many years an taught many lessons before she was sold and re-homed to Alaska. Now, we are on the hunt for a new vessel to teach the next generation! The main idea of a floating classroom is to inspire kids and to get them involved in learning, particularly about STEM sciences, the importance of the Delaware rivershed, and local history. Aside from the obvious lessons, like biology and aquatic studies math can be taught on the water, including the calculation of river speed, horse power and turbulence.

September 27 marks World Rivers Day and celebrates the many values of rivers and encourages the improved stewardship of rivers around the world.
SPLASH provides exciting, hands-on STEM learning about the Delaware River – source of drinking water for over 14 million people. Stewardship of the River is an important theme running through SPLASH classes - from the sensitivity of River macroinvertebrates to increased awareness of the impact of human activities on the River, through the Enviroscape model.

The Lower Delaware Wild and Scenic River features historic resources of exceptional value. The D&R Canal - part of our nation’s industrial and transport heritage - was created to provide a faster route for coal-laden canal boats to move to markets in NJ and NY. SPLASH students see up close how the canal was built, and the canal’s current function - delivering Delaware River drinking water for residents in central NJ.

The Lower Delaware Wild and Scenic River features natural resources of exceptional value. The River is part of the Atlantic Flyway for migratory birds. Basic birding exposes SPLASH students to waterfowl, swallows, herons and on occasion - the Bald Eagle. Students also identify phytoplankton species - the foundation of the food web.
