Congratulations to Maya Trempe, recipient of the Carl E. & Margaret F. Dryer Scholarship!

Maya is an exceptional student whose academic accomplishments are matched by her generosity, leadership, and commitment to making her school and community a better place. With a 4.4 GPA, a 1370 SAT score, and AP Scholar with Honor recognition, Maya has excelled academically while embracing every opportunity to learn, lead, and serve.

A four-year member of the Lakewood High School girls tennis team, Maya has served as a team captain and has learned that true leadership is about kindness, openness, and helping others feel that they belong. She brings that same spirit to her many other activities, including the Lakewood Project, Model UN, Mock Trial, History Club, Amnesty International, National Honor Society, and Tri-M Music Honor Society.

Maya has also been a dedicated member of the Lakewood community. She volunteers her time helping with alumni tours, welcoming former Rangers back to LHS and sharing her enthusiasm for the school. She has also volunteered as an Orchestra Practice Buddy and participated in community events.

One of Maya’s teachers summed up her impact perfectly, describing her as “a force to be reckoned with that makes our school better through her work ethic and ebullient attitude.” Her teacher also noted that Maya is one of the most generous students they have ever taught—always willing to give her time and talents and encourage those around her.

Maya plans to study Journalism at The Ohio State University, where her exceptional communication skills, curiosity, and genuine care for others will undoubtedly make an impact.

Congratulations to Ashley Tomsic, recipient of the Donald & Annamarie Chick Family Scholarship!

Ashley is an outstanding example of a student who combines academic excellence with leadership, service, and a strong work ethic. With a 4.0 GPA, AP Scholar with Honor recognition, and more than 20 college credits expected by graduation, Ashley has challenged herself academically while maintaining an impressive commitment to her school and community.

A four-year member of the LHS History Club, Ashley now serves as President, where she has organized field trips, coordinated presentations, recruited members, and shared her passion for history through engaging presentations. She is also a member of National Honor Society, Key Club, Art Club, Drama Club, and the Home Alone Leadership Program.

Ashley has dedicated more than 130 hours to community service, volunteering with the Catechists of the Good Shepherd, LHS Help 2 Others, the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, and other community initiatives.

Ashley has also balanced her rigorous academic and extracurricular schedule with employment, earning increased responsibilities and recognition for her professionalism, dependability, and willingness to go the extra mile.

Ashley plans to study Architecture at The Ohio State University. Her curiosity, initiative, and genuine enthusiasm for learning will serve her well as she takes this next step.

Congratulations to Mia Thomas, recipient of the LREF Pearl Ann Bodle ’50 Memorial Scholarship!

Mia Thomas has embraced the opportunities at Lakewood High School with curiosity, determination, and a genuine desire to grow. With a GPA above 4.0, she has challenged herself through AP, honors, and College Credit Plus courses and has been recognized as a Student of Excellence, AP Scholar, NHS member, and Ohio Governor’s Merit Scholarship recipient.

The arts have been an important part of Mia’s Lakewood experience. A four-year member of the Lakewood Young Filmmakers Academy, she has also been deeply involved in Ranger Marching Band and Wind Ensemble, serving as a section leader and First Clarinet. Her musical accomplishments include a Marching Band Star Performer Award and two perfect scores at Solo and Ensemble.

But Mia’s story is about more than accomplishments. She credits marching band with teaching her to step outside her comfort zone and keep trying when something feels difficult. As a freshman, she entered unsure of her musical abilities and as the only freshman clarinet player in her section. With encouragement from her peers, she worked hard, gained confidence, and ultimately became a leader herself.

Mia brings that same spirit to serving others. Through H2O and other volunteer efforts, she has contributed more than 45 hours helping seniors, supporting community programs, participating in the Home Alone program, and raking leaves for those in need.

Mia’s teachers describe her as positive, compassionate, responsible, and mature beyond her years. She has learned that growth comes from being willing to try something difficult—and continuing to try.

Mia will attend Ohio University, where she plans to pursue Chemistry and Film & Digital Media.

Congratulations to Delaney Starr, recipient of the LREF Student Opportunity Fund Scholarship!

Delaney Starr has made an extraordinary impact at Lakewood High School through her leadership, service, academics, athletics, and commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.

A student leader with a 4.26 GPA, Delaney has challenged herself with a rigorous schedule of AP and honors courses while remaining active in an impressive range of activities. She served as Student Body Vice President, Captain of the Varsity Tennis Team, and Managing Editor of The Lakewood Times, while also participating in orchestra, softball, club tennis, National Honor Society, and the Student Athletic Leadership Team.

Her tennis journey is a testament to her determination. Delaney entered high school having never played tennis and, through year-round training and an extraordinary work ethic, progressed to first singles on the varsity team by her senior year. Her dedication earned her both the MVP and Coaches Awards, as well as Scholar Athlete recognition.

Beyond the classroom and athletic fields, Delaney has demonstrated an exceptional commitment to service. Through the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Rangers for a Cure, she has served as a Team Lead, Student Visionary, and Mentor. Her work organizing campaigns, events, and community outreach earned her the LLS Hero Award. She has also volunteered at softball youth camps.

Those who know Delaney describe her as empathetic, determined, energetic, ambitious, and compassionate—a young woman who leads with both confidence and kindness. Her own journey reflects that same perseverance: when she finds something she is passionate about, she gives it everything she has.

Delaney will continue her education at Loyola University Chicago, where she plans to study Public Health. We are excited to see where her passion for service, advocacy, and helping others takes her next.

Congratulations to Evan Seiler, recipient of the Norm & Ruth Brown Scholarship and the Harry E. Jr. & Nancy Furst Figgie Scholarship!

Evan’s Lakewood High School experience is a wonderful example of what can happen when a student embraces new opportunities, challenges himself, and discovers the value of being part of a community.

A four-year member and captain of the Lakewood High School Swim Team, Evan also served as trumpet section leader in the Ranger Marching Band and participated in cross country, pep band, Pit Orchestra, Model UN, Tri-M, NHS, and the Watters Science Seminar. Outside of school, he dedicated seven years to Boy Scouts, serving as Senior Patrol Leader and earning the rank of Eagle Scout.

His accomplishments are impressive, but those who know Evan emphasize something even more meaningful: his character. Teachers and coaches describe him as respectful, dependable, hardworking, motivated, and a quiet leader who leads by example. On the swim team, his teammates elected him captain, recognizing the commitment and perseverance he demonstrated through challenging workouts and high-pressure competitions.

Evan has also made service a priority, completing more than 90 hours of documented volunteer work through Boy Scouts, Tri-M, athletics, and community organizations. His Eagle Scout project involved creating chess sets for the Cove Community Center, adding another meaningful contribution to the Lakewood community.

Perhaps most telling is Evan’s own reflection on his high school journey. He credits the marching band with helping him develop focus, discipline, friendships, and a sense of belonging. From joining the swim team with no prior experience to returning to a sport he once disliked, Evan learned to embrace challenges rather than shy away from them.

That determination will serve him well as he begins the next chapter of his education at Ohio University, where he plans to study Public Health.

Congratulations to Cooper Russell, recipient of the Beeler-Domotorffy STEM Scholarship!

Cooper Russell is an outstanding student-athlete whose accomplishments in the classroom, on the baseball field, and throughout the Lakewood community reflect his determination, leadership, and character.

With a 4.32 GPA, Cooper has consistently earned highest honors while taking an impressive schedule of AP and College Credit Plus courses, including AP Calculus, AP Statistics, AP Physics, and CCP Spanish. He is an AP Scholar and earned a 5 on the AP Language and Composition exam. His writing talent was also recognized nationally with an Honorable Mention in The New York Times “Where We Are” contest, placing his work in the top 5% of more than 600 applicants.

Cooper is a four-year member of Lakewood High School Varsity Baseball and has earned numerous honors, including Conference Player of the Year, First Team All-Conference, All-District, and All-State recognition. He has also competed extensively with club baseball, traveling to tournaments throughout Ohio and across the country.

Cooper’s impact extends beyond his own accomplishments. Through the Student Athletic Leadership Team, Lakewood Ranger Baseball camps, and club baseball, he has volunteered more than 100 hours mentoring younger athletes, working with students with special needs through Empower Sports, and reading to elementary students.

His dedication was especially evident during last year’s playoffs, when Cooper broke a bone in his hand during his first at-bat. He continued playing through the injury for three more games, helping Lakewood capture its first District Championship in 36 years.

Cooper will continue his academic and athletic careers at Brown University, where he will study Economics and play Division I baseball.

We are proud to support Cooper as he begins this exciting next chapter. His work ethic, resilience, and commitment to others are a wonderful example of what it means to be a Lakewood Ranger.

Congratulations to Mia Resto, recipient of the Carol Webb Scholarship, the Class of 1954 Scholarship, and the LREF Student Opportunity Fund Scholarship!

Mia Resto’s Lakewood High School experience is a story of growth, perseverance, and learning to step outside her comfort zone.

A dedicated student, Mia challenged herself with an impressive schedule of AP and College Credit Plus courses, including AP U.S. History, AP European History, AP Government, AP Statistics, and CCP Spanish. She worked especially hard to strengthen her writing skills in AP Language and Composition, earning a 4 on the AP exam.

Mia was also a member of the Lakewood High School swim team all four years, earning a varsity letter for three. Swimming taught her the value of hard work, dedication, coachability, and resilience—lessons she carried into the classroom. She credits that mindset with helping her discover that improvement comes from effort and believing in her ability to grow.

Community service has been another important part of Mia’s Lakewood experience. She completed 43 hours of service through H2O, the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, swim events, and her congregation, where she helped organize activities, performances, games, and a carnival for children. She also helped bring a dance to senior citizens through H2O.

Perhaps Mia’s greatest accomplishment has been her personal growth. Teachers describe her transformation from a shy student who played it safe into a confident young leader who embraces challenges. This year, she took on the largest role in her congregation’s community play—including four musical numbers!

Mia will attend The College of Wooster, where she plans to study Marketing, Advertising, and Communication. Her goal is to become a copywriter and combine her love of writing with her passion for connecting with others.

Congratulations to Charlotte Reed, recipient of the LREF Class of 1954 Scholarship and the Carolyn Brown Nursing Scholarship!

Charlotte has spent her time at Lakewood High School challenging herself academically, serving her community, and developing the leadership and resilience that will serve her well as she pursues her dream of becoming a nurse.

A dedicated student, Charlotte has excelled in advanced coursework, including AP Biology, Chemistry, and Statistics. Her teachers describe her as a diligent, thoughtful learner who approaches problems with curiosity, precision, and a desire to truly understand. She has been recognized through Lakewood’s Celebration of Excellence all four years.

Charlotte’s commitment to others is equally impressive. Through H2O (Help to Others), she has participated in numerous service activities and served as a leader with the HOME ALONE program, helping teach younger students important safety and wellness skills. She also spent two summers as a Camp Invention counselor, inspiring elementary students to explore STEM. In total, Charlotte has completed more than 100 hours of community service.

A three-year varsity gymnast and senior team captain, Charlotte has learned the persistence required to master difficult skills and the importance of encouraging those around her. She has also participated in indoor and outdoor track, National Honor Society, and the ASL Club.

Charlotte says her Lakewood experience has taught her the importance of Diversity, Equity, and Belonging. Through H2O and gymnastics, she has found opportunities to serve, lead, build relationships, and make a meaningful impact in her community.

Charlotte plans to study Nursing at Kent State University, her first-choice school. She has been accepted at all five universities to which she applied.

We are proud to support Charlotte as she begins this next chapter. Her compassion, determination, and commitment to helping others will serve her well as she pursues a career in nursing.

Congratulations to Sandy Penney, recipient of the Westshore Arts Council Scholarship!

Sandy Penney is a talented artist, dedicated student-athlete, community volunteer, and creative thinker whose time at Lakewood High School has been shaped by her passion for art and her commitment to making a difference.

A four-year member of the LHS girls’ lacrosse team, Sandy has demonstrated perseverance, teamwork, and leadership on and off the field. She is also Vice President of the National Art Honor Society and has embraced opportunities to explore photography, graphic design, digital and film media, drawing, painting, printing, and more.

Her artistic accomplishments are impressive. This year, Sandy earned multiple Scholastic Art Awards, including Silver Keys and Honorable Mentions in graphic design and photography. Her love of photography extends well beyond the classroom, where she continually practices and develops her creative voice through her camera.

Sandy is equally committed to serving her community. Through Lakewood H2O, she has contributed more than 50 hours of volunteer service, including food bank support, garden projects, book drives, community events, and the HOME ALONE project, where she serves as a high school leader helping teach younger students practical safety and decision-making skills.

Teachers describe Sandy as mature, creative, inclusive, and genuinely enjoyable to be around—a student who encourages others and brings people together. Sandy credits the LHS art department with helping her discover and develop her passion, while her experiences at Lakewood have taught her the importance of stepping outside her comfort zone, embracing different perspectives, and believing in her own creative voice.

Sandy plans to study Photography at the Cleveland Institute of Art, her first-choice school, with the possibility of pursuing a second major in Animation or Game Design. She has already received a CIA Merit Scholarship!

Congratulations to Abigail (Abby) Peck, recipient of the Beeler-Domotorffy STEM Scholarship!

Throughout her four years at Lakewood High School, Abby distinguished herself as an exceptional scholar, accomplished musician, dedicated leader, and compassionate mentor. Whether excelling in the classroom, performing on stage, or helping classmates succeed, Abby approached every opportunity with curiosity, kindness, and a commitment to excellence.

Teachers describe Abby as dependable, thoughtful, hardworking, and an outstanding critical thinker. A passionate learner with a love for music and languages, she completed four years of French, including AP French, while consistently supporting classmates and sharing her knowledge with others.

Abby challenged herself with one of Lakewood High School’s most rigorous academic schedules, earning a 4.26 GPA while completing numerous AP and College Credit Plus courses. She was recognized as a National Merit Commended Scholar, AP Scholar with Honor, Distinguished Honor Roll student, four-time Scholar Athlete, and Celebration of Excellence honoree.

Outside the classroom, Abby has made a tremendous impact through music and leadership. A four-year orchestra member, Orchestra Officer, Tri-M Music Honor Society member, Lakewood Project performer, Pit Orchestra cellist, and French Club Officer, she has shared her talents while inspiring those around her. Through the First Ring Student Leadership Initiative, she researched educational issues, mentored others, and presented at the Power of Partnerships Conference. She also participated in Mock Trial, National Honor Society, and four years of girls tennis.

This fall, Abby will attend Bowling Green State University to study Medical Laboratory Science or Micro/Molecular Biology as she works toward her goal of attending medical school and becoming an obstetrician-gynecologist.
