Communities In Schools (CIS) launched the Being Present Matters campaign to call roll on the 13.9 million students who were absent from school last year. Their reasons why are very real.

A mentor is someone who shows up. Not because they have to. But because they believe in you.

Jerry Storvick showed up for generations of Clover Park students. He listened. He believed. He was present—and it changed everything.

We had a great time at Lakewood SummerFEST last weekend. The breezes kept blowing our flyers off the table, but we gave out a lot of candy, had great conversations with festivalgoers, and reunited with alumni.

We also had the opportunity to remind everyone of our two upcoming events:

1) September 11, 10:30-2:30, School Supply Drive at the Washington State Fair - bring school supplies to donate and get free admission to the fair!

2) September 12, 8:30-12:30pm, let's sort the supplies! We're gathering a team of awesome volunteers to sort the generous donations we collect at the Fair. This role provides essential administrative, operational, and financial support that keeps our organization running smoothly and allows our team to stay focused on what matters most: ensuring every student has the support they need to reach their full potential.

💡 Did you know that 1 in 4 U.S. students were chronically absent last year? That means they missed 10 percent or more of the school year—that's almost a full month of classes! And the impact is serious: students who miss too much school fall behind and are less likely to graduate.

Communities In Schools (CIS) offers a unique solution to combat chronic absenteeism. We place a trained, caring adult, known as a site coordinator, inside the school building who works daily to provide support and connection to the resources students need to show up to school prepared and ready to learn.

Communities In Schools works alongside students every day to help them stay in school and achieve in life.

Last year, CIS students achieved strong outcomes: 99% stayed in school, 98% were promoted, and 98% graduated. School supplies are often one of the first supports that helps a student start strong.

There's a back-to-school backpack giveaway, today through Friday, at Clover Park Church of Christ. They're giving away pens, pencils, pencil cases, rulers and more, stuffed into every backpack.

Pick up times are:
