We love our friends at CSULB Shark Lab!

Our Marine Science classroom had a fintastic visit this week with active researchers 🦈 Our presenter dove into what it takes to build a career in Marine Biology, the schooling along the way, and shared jaw-some insights about the Great white sharks that swim right off our coast. It was an unforgettable, splash-worthy experience!

(Our Marine Science course is 6th grade science with a Marine Science emphasis. Essentially, this course covers all NGSS aligned standards for 6th grade as we take advantage of taking a deep dive into the natural world so closely available to us here in socal 🌊)

After exploring the unique characteristics and fascinating phenomenon of bioluminescent animals in the abyssal zone of the ocean, the Marine Science students enjoyed a little chemistry! Beginning with tonic water and a UV flashlight, the students observed the glowing reaction and then experimented by adding different solutions to stop the emission of light.

Elementary Hot Air Balloon production is in full swing!
Mrs. Steadman’s and Mrs. Orr’s students worked in groups to carefully craft their balloon in preparation for launch day on Feb. 25th!!

The 8th grade Earth Science class enjoyed learning about the importance of water as a natural resource and discovering where Southern California gets the water that flows from our taps. In the lab, students sampled tap water from five local cities to observe its clarity, odor, and taste.
Next time you see one of these students on campus, be sure to ask them which local water they thought tasted the best!
