There’s something about this time of year that feels like a fresh start. 🍂

The kids are heading back to school. Summer schedules are winding down. Routines are returning. And there’s just a hint of crispness in the air.

But before you fill your calendar back up with everyone else’s needs, take a minute to ask yourself:

What do I want the rest of this year to look and feel like?

We still have more than four months left in 2026.

That’s enough time to make meaningful progress on a goal.

To prioritize your health.

To strengthen a relationship.

To create more joy.

To finally make time for something you’ve been putting off.

You don’t have to wait until January for a fresh start.

Maybe this season isn’t just about getting back into a routine. Maybe it’s about getting back to YOU.

What’s one thing you want to focus on before the end of the year? 🍂

Success looks good on paper.

But somewhere between the promotion, the milestones, and the life everyone says you should want, the same drive that built it all never learned how to turn inward.

Melanie Shmois is a licensed therapist and multi-certified coach who works with executives, entrepreneurs, and high performers ready to release what success silently drains, not through generic frameworks, but through a private, untemplated space built for exactly this.

Somewhere along the way, many of us learned to measure our time by what it produces.

A workout improves our health.

A podcast teaches us something.

A walk becomes a chance to take a call.

A hobby becomes a side hustle.

Even rest can become something we're trying to optimize.

But what about doing something simply because...

you enjoy it?

Watching the clouds.

Sitting in the sun.

Reading something that teaches you absolutely nothing.

Laughing until you lose track of time.

Creating something no one will ever see.

There is value in experiences that don't make you more productive, successful, efficient, or impressive.

Especially for high achievers who have spent years measuring themselves by what they accomplish.

Sometimes fulfillment begins when we stop asking,

"What am I getting out of this?"

and allow ourselves to simply experience it.

Joy doesn't always need a purpose.

I've always had a soft spot for Dolly Parton.

Not just because of her talent—or because she had a Boston Terrier named Popeye, which obviously made us kindred spirits. 😉🐾

But because Dolly always seemed to know exactly who she was.

Feminine and strong.

Kind and boundaried.

Wildly successful and incredibly generous.

She followed her intuition, did things her own way, and never seemed particularly interested in becoming more palatable for other people.

She trusted herself.

That's something I think many high-achieving people can lose along the way.

We become so good at doing what's expected, being responsible, achieving the next thing, and making the "right" decisions that we can lose touch with a quieter question:

What do I actually want?

Dolly built a life that felt unmistakably hers—and then used what she created to make life better for so many others.

What a beautiful legacy.

Know yourself.

Trust yourself.

Be generous with what you have.

And don't be afraid to do it your way.

Rest in peace, Dolly. You were truly one of a kind. 🤍

I've been thinking about this idea a lot lately...

Maybe healing isn't always about what goes away.

We tend to measure our growth by what we've gotten rid of.

Less anxiety.

Less people-pleasing.

Less perfectionism.

Less reactivity.

Less stress.

And those things matter.

But what about what starts to come back?

Your curiosity.

Your playfulness.

Your ability to laugh easily.

Your desire to create something for absolutely no reason.

Your ability to sit still without reaching for your phone.

Your capacity to notice something beautiful on an ordinary Tuesday.

Your JOY.

I think somewhere along the way, many of us became so busy becoming successful adults that we forgot some of the things we instinctively knew as children.

How to play.

How to wonder.

How to be fascinated by something that serves absolutely no productive purpose.

How to just...be.

Maybe healing isn't about becoming an entirely new version of yourself.

Maybe part of healing is finding your way back to the parts of you that were there all along.

So I'm curious...

What's coming back for you?

And if nothing comes to mind right away, maybe start small.

Look up at the sky today.

See if you can find something in the clouds.

When I accomplish that goal...

When I make more money...

When I lose the weight...

When I get the recognition...

When I finally get there...
then I'll feel successful.

Then I'll feel confident.

Then I'll feel happy.

And sometimes we do.

For a little while.

But then something interesting happens...

The goalpost moves.

There's another level to reach. Another problem to solve. Another thing we decide we need before we can finally feel the way we've been chasing.

One of the most powerful things I learned through thought work was that the achievement itself doesn't create my emotional experience.

What I make the achievement mean does.

And if that's true, it raises a much bigger question:
Why am I waiting until the finish line to give myself permission to feel the way I want to feel?

This doesn't mean we stop setting big goals.

I LOVE goals.

It means we stop asking our accomplishments to do a job they were never designed to do.

You can pursue more AND appreciate what you've already created.

You can be ambitious AND experience joy now.

You can want the next level without believing something is missing from this one.

Maybe that's a different kind of success.

Building a life you're excited to grow...without needing the next achievement to finally make you feel whole.

That's the kind of wealth I'm interested in.

What if, just for today, you asked your brain to look for what's already working?

We spend so much time noticing what needs to be fixed.

The relationship that could be better.

The goal we haven't reached.

The weight we haven't lost.

The thing our partner isn't doing.

The work that still needs to get done.

The part of ourselves we think needs improvement.

And without realizing it, we can walk through a pretty beautiful life constantly noticing what's missing from it.

I've learned to intentionally interrupt that pattern.

Instead of always asking, "What's wrong?"

I practice asking...

What's already working?

Where am I growing?

What relationship in my life feels really good?

What am I proud of myself for?

What does my body allow me to do?

What have I created that I once dreamed about having?

What ordinary part of my life would a younger version of me be absolutely thrilled to see?

This doesn't mean we stop wanting more.

It doesn't mean we ignore problems or pretend everything is perfect.

We can desire growth AND deeply appreciate what already is.

Maybe that's where so much of our joy lives.

Not in finally getting everything exactly the way we want it...

but in becoming someone who can recognize how much is already good.

So today, give your brain a new assignment:

Show me what's working.

Then pay attention to what it finds.

We spend years learning how to succeed professionally.

We set goals.

Build businesses.

Climb ladders.

Invest.

Plan.

Perform.

But somewhere along the way, many high achievers stop giving that same level of intention to the life they're actually living.

Your relationships.

Your health.

Your joy.

Your peace.

The things you want simply because they make you feel more alive.

I love ambition. I love big goals. And I love helping people achieve them.

But I'm far more interested in helping you build a life where your outside success is matched by how fulfilled you feel on the inside.

Because having a wildly successful career and a personal life you love?

Very kinda chic. 😉

08/17/2026

What have you asked it to prove?

If you walk into a meeting thinking, “No one takes me seriously,” your brain will notice the person who interrupts you and conveniently miss the three people who leaned in and listened.

If you believe, “I'm terrible at relationships,” your brain will catalog every awkward interaction and disagreement as evidence.

If you're thinking, “I never have enough time,” you'll notice every interruption, delay, and unfinished task.

We tend to notice evidence that supports what we already believe.

And this is one of the reasons I LOVE teaching the Self-Coaching Model.

It gives us an opportunity to slow everything down and get curious about the thoughts we're carrying around, often without even realizing it.

Because your thoughts don't just influence how you feel.

They influence what you notice, how you interpret what's happening, how you show up, and ultimately the results you create.

So here's a question to sit with today:

What belief has your brain been busy trying to prove true?

And maybe an even more powerful one...

Do you still want to believe it?

This is where the work begins.

There’s something about August that always feels like a transition.

We’re still soaking up summer, but the back-to-school shopping has started, calendars are filling up again, and routines are right around the corner.

And maybe that makes this the perfect time to ask:

Where are YOU on your list?

Not what does your family need.

Not what does your boss need.

Not what needs to get accomplished before Monday.

What do you want?

I’ve been thinking about this a lot because the goals my clients bring to coaching are so beautifully different.

One wanted to find a healthy relationship—and is now dating someone she’s incredibly excited about.

Another has maintained her weight loss while completely transforming her relationship with food.

And recently, a client sent me a message saying that for the first time in his life, he’s slowing down enough to feel his feelings and actually notice the scenery around him.

That one really stayed with me.

Because sometimes success isn’t another accomplishment.

Sometimes success is being present enough to experience the life you’ve already created.

So before fall gets busy, ask yourself:

What would I love to create, change, heal, or experience before the end of this year?

Whatever came to mind—>don’t dismiss it.

Your personal goals deserve your attention, too.

And if you’re ready to stop putting yours on the back burner, this is exactly the work I love doing.

Your private sanctuary awaits.

DM me FALL and tell me what you’re ready to make room for.
