A Huge shout-out to Lisa DeLong from the Moonlight Mirage Ranch for letting us visit, play, learn, and for providing the best field trip of the summer. Back in the day, nearly 40 years ago, Lisa could be found right here at Lakewood Learning Center up in the kitchen. She was the best cook our school has ever had! We have continued to stay in touch, and she remains a dear friend. When she started kicking around the idea of a Pony Farm and incorporating field trips for the kids, I never imagined she would get it going so fast. I did know it would be magnificent because that is what Lisa produces.

Visiting the Pony Farm turned into such a valuable learning experience for the children. The children made connections with the animals while having so much fun. They were offered opportunities to develop responsibility as they brushed the horses and learned about feeding them. They developed empathy as later in the day Jasmine (the baby) became overwhelmed and needed a break. Lisa developed games (relay race with wagons collecting feeding items, hula-hoop lasso) that involved teamwork, cooperation, and communication, helping the children develop social skills. The children painted horseshoes, which have historical and cultural significance. The children, and staff were thrilled and honored to be the first group to experience this astonishing field trip!

The Moonlight Mirage Ranch is a private facility offering Western Horse-Riding Lessons, and Pony Farm Events for Birthday Parties, Family Gatherings, Picnics, etc.

Because we know that field trips and hands on learning make concepts more memorable, we took the kids out on the town today. We had a blast at the Downtown Aquarium! Just keep swimming :-)

All Month the children have been learning about the importance of community helpers. Learning about community helpers is an essential process for preschool children because it helps them to create a sense of belonging and safety within their community.

The week before I started my post with…We are so blessed to have such an astonishing community. Today it came full circle.

Police officers were last week’s theme. We learned that Police could help in emergencies or problems the that are not always crimes. They could go to car accidents, fires, or people who are sick or hurt. The police work with firefighters, ambulances, and rescuers. They could direct traffic, help lost children, give traffic tickets, and many other things. And they can even play and hang out at schools.

Friday, we wrapped up our unit with a visit from Officer Thomas from the Denver Police Department. Officer Thomas took time out of his busy day to spend with our children. I couldn’t be prouder of this young man. You see, the back story is, Officer Thomas took some of his first steps right here at Lakewood Learning Center. He grew up at LLC and Friday he came back to his old stomping grounds to share his expertise and knowledge with today’s children.

Thank you, Officer Thomas. We are so grateful for the work you do in our community!

We are so blessed to have such an astonishing community.

As educators and parents, we know it’s essential to teach children fire safety basics at an early age to prevent tragedies and stay safe. Here at school, we have monthly “fire drills” to practice fire escape plans and help kids understand fire safety basics.

During today's drill the West Metro Fire Department not only assured our building was safe, but they also took the time to talk with the children and played games with them before heading out on their next call.

As you can imagine, this was a magical moment for all. To all the first responders, and especially those on truck #3 today, thank you for all that you do every day in contributing positively to the overall health of children in this community.

Today we began our celebration of Día del niño, or children's day. Día del niño is an annual celebration held on April 30 throughout Mexico. On Día del niño, the main focus is on the children and making them feel special. Thanks to Paaola Bojorquez for celebrating her family culture and providing a fun learning experience to our children.
