Ms. M. - My Favorite Math Teacher

In the world of the Whozits, the math teachers are among the most revered of citizens. Ms. M. is somewhat of a legend among the Whozits.

She’s credited with teaching Captain Mathinator his trademark Division Defense, and it’s rumored that she’s the one who taught the Sneaky Subtractor how to subtract. Ms. M. was recently honored by the Association of Addition Ambassadors for her “admirable achievement in the ancient art of addition.”

Do you feel like you remember events and facts better when you’ve had fun while learning them? You’re not alone!

With the help of the MRI, scientists have connected dopamine with improved memory. Dopamine is secreted into the brain during moments of happiness, and when that happens, it causes a chemical response that commits learning to memory.

Dr. Martha Burns compares dopamine to a “save button” in her 2012 research paper on the subject. So, if you want to commit something to memory, science suggests you try to have fun while doing it.

That’s why math games are so much better at helping your kids remember math facts than things like flash cards and worksheets. When kids play math games, the fun they have causes their minds to hit the save button over and over.
