2️⃣5️⃣ 1979 – The Christian Awakening senior retreat program is established under the leadership of Br. Jerome Meyer, C.S.C. ’57, Rosie Torrence, and Ed Mack ’66. Today, St. Edward offers a variety of retreat programs for students at every grade level.

2️⃣6️⃣ 1982 – The National Forensics League awards debate coach Richard Chunat with the Double-Diamond Pin, recognizing him as one of the finest high school debate coaches in the country. After more than three decades of coaching, Chunat was inducted into the Ohio High School Speech League Coaches Hall of Fame in 1994 and received special recognition in both the Ohio House of Representatives and the United States Congress.

2️⃣7️⃣ 1982 – After defeating top-ranked Midwest City High School from Oklahoma, the wrestling team wins the first of its 11 national championships.

2️⃣8️⃣ 1983 – Howard Ferguson’s book The Edge: The Guide to Fulfilling Dreams, Maximizing Success and Enjoying a Lifetime of Achievement is published. Coach Ferguson led the Eagles to their first 11 state wrestling championships and seven national titles. The Athletic Hall of Fame is named in his memory.

Since 1956, one outstanding Edsman from each senior class has been named Man of the Year—the highest honor bestowed upon a student. This individual is nominated by his classmates and selected by the faculty and staff for embodying the mission of St. Edward High School. He is a hope-bringer of the highest caliber and exemplifies the school's four Holy Cross pillars as a beacon of faith, a model of excellence, a builder of relationships, and a humble servant leader. We are proud to announce this year's nominees:

⭐ Bradley Eaton ’25, son of Dawn and John Eaton, is a resident of Conneaut and a graduate of Conneaut Middle School.
⭐ Angel Hillsman ’25, son of Angelec and Monroe Hillsman, is from Euclid and attended Our Lady of the Lake School.
⭐ Jack Lentz ’25, son of Elizabeth Reifsnyder and Patrick Lentz ’97, is a resident of Bay Village and a graduate of St. Raphael School.
⭐ Thomas Van Oosten ’25, son of Ellen and Scott Van Oosten, is from North Olmsted and attended St. Bernadette School.

Last week, more than 50 upperclassmen stepped away from their daily routines to participate in Kairos, a three-day retreat held at the Jesuit Retreat Center in Parma. Named for the Greek word meaning “God’s time,” Kairos invites students to pause from the busyness of everyday life and reflect on meaningful questions about their relationship with Jesus.
