In the late morning on the eleventh of November in 1919, one year after the end of what was called The War to End All Wars, it was proclaimed that this day be the first commemoration of what would become known as Veterans Day. Nearly eight years later, Congress would officially recognize the end of the war by concurrent resolution and mark this day as a legal holiday, a day that “should be commemorated with thanksgiving and prayer” and a day dedicated to world peace.

Every November 11th we pause to express our deep gratitude and sincere appreciation to all of our Pierce College veterans for their brave and selfless service to our country. The Veterans Service Offices thank all of you who have sworn the Oath and worn the uniform of the Armed Forces. Moments throughout our nation’s history have demanded a call to duty in order to defend the rights and freedoms of our American family, or to fight for the rights and freedoms of our brothers and sisters across the globe, and you and your own families answered that call.

To all the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, Coasties and Guardians, current and former – from the bottom of our hearts, we thank you. On behalf of the greater Pierce community, thank you for your service to our country and for the sacrifice you and your families have made on our behalf in the name of freedom, liberty and peace. We are proud and honored to be able to serve you as you have already provided us all with the greatest service. Let us also keep in our thoughts and prayers those currently serving overseas, that they may come home safely to rejoin their families as well as this great community of Veterans.

In honor of Veterans Day, the Veterans Services Offices will be closed this Friday, November 11th. If you need to reach us you can leave us an email at [email protected] or at [email protected]. You can also leave a voicemail at (253) 964-6505 for Fort Steilacoom and at (253) 864-3194 for Puyallup. There will be limited phone and email services that day, but you are welcome to call or email with any questions or concerns.

As a reminder, the Military & Veteran Resource Center is hosting a table in front of the Fort Steilacoom Student Life office (Cascade, 4th floor) today from 10:00AM until 2:00PM. Stop by and visit to see what information and resources are available to students, grab a snack and have a chat with a vet about their service.

As we enter the Winter season let us not forget that some of those who served are now being underserved and marginalized. If you are given the opportunity, provide those who are in need with some love and warmth if able to do so.

Again, we thank you and your families for your service and for your continued dedication to our community and our country. It has been our greatest privilege to serve you and serve with you.
“Though we are no longer bound, the Oath never dies…”
