As we get ready for the start of the 2026–2027 school year, LaVille Community Schools would like to share an important update regarding a new state law that impacts all Indiana public schools.

Effective July 1, 2026, Indiana Senate Enrolled Act 78 requires school corporations to establish policies limiting the use of students' personal wireless communication devices during the instructional day, except in specific situations permitted by state law.

We know there have been a number of questions and misconceptions surrounding this new legislation. The graphic included with this post addresses several of the most common misunderstandings.

This new requirement is intended to support student learning by minimizing distractions, encouraging greater classroom engagement, and fostering stronger face-to-face interactions between students and staff.

To comply with this legislation, LaVille Community Schools has revised its student device procedures. Families will receive additional details before the school year begins regarding daily expectations, device storage, and any allowable exceptions. These guidelines will also be included in the 2026–2027 Student Handbook.

We recognize that this represents a change for many families and appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we implement these new expectations. Together, we can continue to provide a learning environment where students are focused, engaged, and positioned for success.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support of LaVille Community Schools. We look forward to welcoming students back for another successful school year!
