2025…

I’m over it.

I have not been active in this account for quite some time.

Burnout is real.

And I felt I had run out of things to say about mental health and post traumatic stress.

I started exploring what life had to offer instead.

That’s not wrong, because that’s the point of recovery work.

Living.

And learning to live in a world where you really don’t control the levers.

Hard to believe I retired from the fire service 9 years ago today.

I still had a lot of healing to do.

Then I had to discover who I really was, absent the uniform.

Then I had to suffer loss.

And a car accident.

And my first Christmas without my husband of 37 years.

You get the point.

But these last several months have brought forth a desire to get back to writing, to share my perspective on living a decade with the effects of post-traumatic stress.

Because that’s not really a story that’s been told.

Here’s to better days ahead in 2026!

Also known as the 5 stages of grieving, but I prefer it as waking up. Unlike other processes, grieving is not a linear process. It skips around from one emotion to another. Turning off your emotions doesn’t help. You have to feel the feels. And that’s okay. Take your time. You got this.

One thing I have learned over the years is that meeting up for exercise is actually a good and powerful thing. Certainly it adds to the fun factor. It provides an opportunity to cheer each other on, learn faster, and have a good laugh. This photo was taken just before the hailstorm. A memorable moment for sure.

Scammers exist, the bane of society.

I have a very low opinion of them. I was scammed twice while I was battling the demons of my PTSD. Fortunately I got my money back. But some of my personal information now exists in the cyber world of criminals.

Not sharing any of this for sympathy. My point is this: people with mental health challenges need better protection from fraudulent and deceitful behavior.

Now, I don’t have an answer for how to address this. It’s above my pay grade.

Today I reported a scam attempt to the legal authorities. Will it go anywhere? Doubtful, but now that I am healthier, I fight back.

For me. My family. And in honor of the unknown, who don’t have the capacity to do so.

Fear is such a liar. But that is what PTSD brings to the table. An overdose of fear.

How to respond to that?

Wherever you are, you are safe.

What happened is in the past.

Yes I know. It sounds overly simplistic.

And I spent many a winter storm listening g to the howling wind reminding myself that I was safe, here and now.

It takes time.

You are retraining your brain, unlearning the lie of fear.

You can do it.

I believe in you.

Consistency is relatively easy when you have a schedule.

Drive to work? You know when you need to leave the house to be on time. You know when you need to get fuel. You know when you need to service your vehicle.

Because you know these things, you build a process into your life to handle them.

Once the process is built, and tested over time, refinements can be made.

The process becomes easier.

Consistency is created.

Not all thoughts are worth your time.

It’s okay to let them go away.

If it’s something you actually do need to engage with, schedule the time on your calendar.

For example, I look at my financials once a week. That’s it. It frees me up from excessive worry and distracting thoughts.

If an emergency comes up, like it did with the recent storms, I already knew my situation, which allowed me the worry-free opportunity to resolve the issue on my property.

There’s a time and a place for thoughts. It’s your CHOICE on when and how you engage with them.

So let them go.

You already know what’s important.
