In the Czech Republic, a homeowner digging near an old barn foundation uncovered what looked like an ordinary rectangular rock. But archaeologists soon realized it was something very different.

The stone was actually half of a Bronze Age casting mold used to make spearheads. Carved from volcanic rock around 1350 BC, the mold would have been clamped together and filled with molten bronze to produce weapons.

Researchers say the mold shows clear signs of heavy use, meaning dozens of spearheads may have been cast from it. The stone itself likely originated hundreds of miles away in what is now northern Hungary, suggesting long distance trade networks were already active in Central Europe more than three thousand years ago.

What started as a forgotten piece of stone in a backyard turned out to be one of the best preserved Bronze Age weapon molds ever discovered in Central Europe.
