Beginning August 11, drivers who travel more than 10 miles per hour over the posted school-zone speed limit while the school-zone flashing lights are active may receive a $100 civil citation mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle.

The School Zone Speed Safety Program was launched earlier this year as part of the City of Lakeland’s Vision Zero initiative, which focuses on reducing traffic-related injuries and improving safety for students, school staff, pedestrians, and motorists. Fourteen automated speed enforcement cameras are positioned near eight school locations throughout Lakeland.

Since the program was activated, motorists exceeding the school-zone speed limit by more than 10 mph during active school-zone hours have received warning notices. Beginning August 11, the program will transition from warning to citations.

How the Program Works
The automated cameras monitor traffic only when the school-zone flashing lights are active. If a vehicle is traveling more than 10 mph over the posted speed limit, the system captures images of the potential violation.

Every potential violation is then reviewed and approved by the Lakeland Police Department before a citation is issued. Approved violations result in a $100 civil citation mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle.

The 14 cameras are located near the following school entrances:
• Lincoln Academy – 10th Street
• Crystal Lake Elementary / Crystal Lake Middle School – N. Crystal Lake Drive and S. Crystal Lake Drive
• Southwest Middle School – Lincoln Avenue
• North Lakeland Elementary – W. Robson Street
• Lakeland High School – Hollingsworth Road
• Lakeland Highlands Middle School – Lake Miriam Drive
• Sleepy Hill Elementary – Sleepy Hill Road
• Dixieland Elementary, Southwest Elementary, and Southwest Middle School – Beacon Road

Important info for families in our community, as they prepare for the upcoming school year. Please be mindful out on the roads, as school buses will soon run, and children and crossing guards are depending on your safe driving habits.🚍📚📓✏️

The 2026-27 school year is approaching fast! Some important info for new and returning PCPS families:

- Visit polkschoolsfl.com/enroll for instructions on how to enroll and determine your zoned school.

- Supply lists are provided by each school, and are usually posted on the school’s website or social media. If the info isn’t available yet, just reach out to your school directly.

- PCPS has no districtwide rule on backpacks, but each school can set their own backpack policy, so check with your school for details. Same goes for water bottles and other items.

- Uniform/dress code specifics are set by each school.

- Breakfast and lunch are offered at no charge for all PCPS students.

- Orientation for K-8, middle and high schools will be on Wednesday, Aug. 5. Elementary school orientation is on Thursday, Aug. 6. School starts on Tuesday, Aug. 11.

Red, White, and Kaboom Independence Day Celebration on Friday, July 3, 2026, at Lake Mirror along the Frances Langford Promenade from 6:00 p.m. to 9:15 p.m.

This free patriotic celebration will feature live music, local food vendors, patriotic entertainment, and family-friendly fun as our community joins others across the nation in commemorating 250 years of American history. The celebration will culminate with a spectacular fireworks display over Lake Mirror at 9:00 p.m.
