Featuring another FSC ALUMNI BAND CAMP COUNSELOR- Kasey Rakes (Clarinet) Mrs. Rakes graduated from Florida Southern College in 2014 with a Bachelor's degree in Music Education. Her first year being a counselor was 2012. After graduation Mrs. Rakes taught 1 year of elementary music and 9 years of middle school band. Currently she is teaching 7th - 12th grade Band at McKeel while also returning to FSC to earn her Masters in Education. Mrs. Rakes has been a part of the camp for 11 years! She spends the rest of her with her guys - husband Johnathan and 5 year old Jace!! Mrs. Rakes will be teaching the "Ear Training" classes and working with the Woodwind Ensemble Elective.

WACKY WEDNESDAY - Featuring another FSC ALUMNI BAND CAMP COUNSELOR - Dan Bates (Trumpet & Piano ) Mr. Bates graduated from Florida Southern College in 2010 with a BA in Piano Performance and 2011 with a Master of Arts in Teaching. Mr. Bates continued being a band camp counselor through 2012. Upon his graduation he began teaching at St. Paul Lutheran and just completed his 14th year. He has grown the program from a before school club of 9 kids to nearly 150 person band program!! He has received the 5 year Linda Mann Superior Award and the Tom Bishop Award. He is an active adjudicator for the FBA. Mr. Bates is married to another FSC Alumni and Camp Counselor, Denise (Cayer) Bates,( French Horn ) they have two boys: Gideon and Isaaac, 9 and 6 respectively. Mr. Bates plays the piano and trumpet at church on a regular basis. When he isn't teaching, he enjoys training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and reading.

TERRIFIC TUESDAY! Featuring another one of our FSC ALUMNI BAND CAMP COUNSELORS - Tyler Marais (Saxophone) Mr. Marais graduated from Florida Southern College in the Spring of 2020 with a Bachelor's degree in Music Education. He spent a few years as a camp counselor starting in 2018. He took over the Dorm Dad role in 2022. After graduating FSC Mr. Marais became the Director of Bands and Color Guard at Safety Harbor MS from 2020-2024 and currently is Director of Bands at Davenport High School since 2024. He is a diehard Tampa Bay Buccaneers fan!

Monday Madness, Two for the Price of One!!!
Yes, Featuring another FSC ALUMNI BAND CAMP COUNSELOR - Zack Murdock ( Percussion ). Mr. Murdock graduated from Florida Southern College in 2008 with a Bachelor's degree in Music Education and a Master's in Educational Leadership from UCF in 2015. After graduating Florida Southern College Mr. Mudock was the Band Director at Mulberry High School from 2008-2015. Mr. Murdock then moved to Lakeland High School and was the band director from 2015-2019. He then decided to dip his toes into the world of administration and served as the Assistant Principal of Mulberry HS from 2019-2024. Currently, Mr. Murdock is the Director of Business Development at Haven Building Products - a building supply company for large production home builders. He spends his free time with his wife Amanda, and 2 children Aubrey and Owen.

It's a MARVELOUS MONDAY! Time to feature another one of our FSC ALUMNI BAND CAMP COUNSELORS - Dr. Dawn Hardy ( Oboe ) Dr. Hardy graduated from Florida Southern College in 2008 with a degree in Music Education. She then continued her education at FSU, receiving a Masters in Oboe Performance. She started teaching in 2011 and has been the band director at Bartow Middle School since 2014. While at Bartow M.S. she was Teacher of the Year in 2023 and earned her Doctorate in Education from Florida Southern College! Dr. Hardy was a counselor at the Florida Southern College Band Camp in 2006, but has taught the double reed masterclasses 2006-present.
Dr. Hardy is an active adjudicator for Florida Bandmasters Association and serves on the FBA Mentorship Committee.
She is also a Freelance musician and private lesson instructor throughout Central Florida. She is a Disney Candlelight Musician from 2022-present. Adjunct Oboe Instructor and Music Appreciation at SEU 2022-present. Performed the US Premiere of an English Horn Concerto in 2024 with the Lakeland Symphony Orchestra. She just celebrated 15 years of being married to her husband Mike and they have 2 silly girls, aged 11 and 6. Lilly is all signed up for band camp this year!!!

SAUCEY SATURDAY! Yes, it's that time again to feature another FSC ALUMNI BAND CAMP COUNSELOR - Ms. April Malott (French Horn) Ms. Malott graduated from Florida Southern College in December 2002 with a Bachelorβs of Music Education and Music Performance. She was a counselor from 2000-2003. Just a little trivia 2000 was the first year Dr. Jossim and Ms. Berry started the camp. Ms. Malott was the band director at Mulberry Middle from 2003-2016. After leaving Mulberry Middle School, she worked as the Camp Director for Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches from 2016-2022. In 2022, Ms. Malott began teaching Algebra I at Dunnellon High School in Marion County. If any of our other FSC ALUMNI have a band camp picture of Ms. Malott please send it my way !!!π
