CONCEPTUAL POP ARTIST MARK MITCHELL
FEATURED IN EXHIBIT AT FSC

LAKELAND (Jan. 8, 2016) – Multimedia pop artist Mark Mitchell is bringing his slyly subversive works to Lakeland in an upcoming exhibit at the Melvin Gallery at Florida Southern College.
The exhibit, “Hidden Agenda: The Conceptual Pop Art of Mark Mitchell,” opens with a 7 p.m. reception on Jan. 22 and runs through Feb. 19. The reception and the exhibit are free and open to the public.

Mitchell, a former New York advertising director, employs images from movies, TV, celebrities, and commercialism in surprising and sometimes surrealistic fashion to provoke the viewer’s thoughts and senses. His intent is to engage and immerse his viewers in a holistic artistic experience. He says, “My work is an exploration of the irony, contradiction, parallels and harmony to be found in 21st-century life. … We are living in a land of artifice. Spin is the order of the day. At its core, my work is an attempt at a wake-up call, by exposing things that may otherwise be hidden from view.”

Although primarily a painter, Mitchell also is a photographer, musician, and voice artist. A graduate of the Pratt Institute in New York, he lives and works in St. Petersburg. His work has been exhibited at Art Basel Miami, and the See | Me Exhibit Space in New York during Armory Arts Week.

Dr. Alex Rich, director of the Melvin Gallery, says Mitchell pushes the limits of realism.

“The vision of the show is fantastic. From sculptures to wall graphics, it offers a perfect blend of the conceptual and the material and a blurring of the boundaries between so-called high and low art. Some of his two-dimensional works occupy an entire wall. He’s taking over the space of the gallery. It’s really exciting,” he says.

The Melvin Gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and is located in the Robert A. Davis Performing Arts Center at FSC.
