The Sun-Sentinel held the annual Palm Beach & Broward County high school NIE awards last night at their Deerfield facility. Some of the schools in attendance were MSJ, The Benjamin School, Dreyfoos School of the Arts, Boca High, Pembroke Pines, Wellington and more. I am pleased to announce that Park Vista walked away with eight (8) awards!

Samantha Franco got an honorable mention for her feature on Mr. Gonzales and Ashton Angles got 2nd place for his layout and design of that article as well as an honorable mention for his Future Innovators story (relating to Mr. Simmons and robotics). Emma Rotem won an honorable mentions for her sports story Unsung Heroes and her feature story on Nellie Bly; Daniel Wu received the same for his layout and design of the Bly story as well as second place for his feature on Lawrence Brannon, wrestler. And the coup de grâce of the night was that PV received 3rd place for Best Overall Paper - plus a shoutout was given to Samantha Franco for creating a brand with her "Sam has Seen Some Things..." column.

Considering the schools we competed against, and the fact that this year's staff was small, I think those are HUGE achievements. I hope if you see any of the students, you will congratulate each on a job well done. I could not be any prouder of them and all the pride and hard work they put into planning and producing the Park Vista newspaper.
