SUNY Technology Conference

SUNY Technology Conference The SUNY Technology Conference is the annual meeting of three SUNY technology professional organizations: COA, EdTOA, and TOA.

The annual meeting of the SUNY's three premier technology oriented professional organizations. The speed and magnitude of change in technology is steadily accelerating. As higher education tries to keep up, campuses need to ensure their IT efforts are real in order to keep pace with their students. Technology enriches the educational experience of students as well as faculty. Not only are IT profe

ssionals charged with making more appropriate and cost-effective use of information technology without sacrificing what matters to higher education, but we provide support and leadership in the university’s commitment to excellence in teaching and learning.

The theme guiding this year’s conference:
Miracle on Campus: Building Winning IT Teams

In 1993 members of the three technical communities of practice, COA, EdTOA and TOA, saw their roles beginning to overlap. While computing, educational technology, and telecommunications each play a vital role, STC’s founders knew that it’s when people in these communities work closely together that a campus runs most smoothly. The founders came together to host an all-encompassing conference to allow for networking and idea exchange across the three groups. In the intervening thirty years the lines between these communities have blurred even more and today, to keep SUNY competitive, we need to work together more than ever.

This year we’ll explore how to build great teams. The best ones include rookies and veterans, so how do we recruit and retain fresh talent as a generation of senior staffers are retiring? Recruitment and retention are especially difficult in the current environment where we compete with higher paying remote and hybrid work options. We also need to engage new talent in our communities of practice, in SUNY wide collaborations, and groom them to be the next generation of chairs, directors and CIO’s.

Be well,
STC Planning Committee

PS, Did we mention that Mike Eruzione, captain of the 1980 USA Hockey Team will be our keynote? You’re not going to want to miss this conference!

It’s the 30th anniversary of the SUNY Technology Conference and we couldn’t be more pleased to announce that STC will be back – in person – in Lake Placid for 2023! We have a great conference planned, including an event at the beautiful new Mt. Van Hoevenberg Olympic Complex.

This year’s theme is "Miracle on Campus: Building Winning IT Teams." Start thinking about how you’ve formed your teams, how you’re planning for succession, and share techniques for managing winning teams. The call for presentations will be coming soon.

We need your help, there are many new people in our organizations who haven’t attended STC in person. We want to tell them why STC is important and why they should consider attending and presenting. Please take a few minutes to let us know what you consider the highlights and benefits of STC:

** 2022 Theme: What is the New Normal? **

In this year's episode of STC ... we explore the new normal. SUNY is back on campus, but staff and students continue to work, teach, and learn from home. We’ve been busy with everything from re-engineering spaces to accommodate hybrid connections, implementing new security policies, assisting faculty with online course design, and even setting up outdoor Wi-Fi access points.

These arrangements pose challenges for every aspect of technology on campus. Many of us are doing more than one job, or just more. How do you deal with the stress of that workload? Is this sustainable? What will endure past the present moment? We salute all the campus technologists who played such a major role enabling and managing all this change. Join us at STC 2022 to discuss how the world around us has made our jobs more complicated and the new normal.

We look forward to meeting and collaborating with everyone! The latest updates will continue to be posted at our website: http://stc.suny.edu

Hello SUNY Technologists,

STC 2022 will be held virtually this year from June 21-23. The planning committee has been weighing all the options for where and how to hold the conference. Thank you to everyone who provided feedback following last year’s conference. In addition, we reached out to campus CIOs to understand how travel and professional development budgets are shaping up for 2022. Another factor in our decision is the ongoing construction in Lake Placid (construction updates: https://www.lakeplacid.com/perfecting) that has taken the conference center and many Olympic venues offline for 2022.

If we were to hold an in-person event in 2022 it would have to be in a location other than Lake Placid, and we estimate we would have about half the usual number of attendees. The planning committee wants to provide the best experience possible and this year a virtual conference fits the bill, allowing as many attendees as possible to share with and learn from our colleagues. We know another virtual conference is disappointing, we feel it too, but be prepared for 2023 – we will be in person, we will be in Lake Placid, it will be a blast!

Save the date for our 30th anniversary, June 19-22, 2023.

Start thinking about what you would like to present on or what you would like to learn. The call for presentations will be coming soon.

Be well,
STC Planning Committee

On behalf of the STC Planning Committee, COA, TOA, and EdTOA, we are pleased we could provide this opportunity for all of you to reconnect with your colleagues.

Thank you to our attendees, to SUNY CPD for their time configuring and running the OnAir platform, and thank you to our Platinum exhibitors, Dell Technologies and Avaya. Without all of our exhibitors, this conference would not be possible.
